Best gift for a six year old girl?
My niece is somewhat tomboyish, but still likes princess stuff and all of that.

Any ideas in about the $40 range?

Smaller stuff is good too.

1. 6 is just about the age most young girls discover sleepovers.
Maybe a trendy kid-sized sleeping bag?

Also projects and kraft kits can be fun. I think the Discovery Store (from the Discovery channel folks) has a bunch of projects and things separated by gender and age group for kids.

Edited on Wed Dec-06-06 03:04 PM by npincus
My daughter is younger (4) but LOVES hers-- she has a smaller, simple version of the $40 one (I saw at target) which has more interactive features for slightly older kids. Here's the one I'm talking about:

Edited on Wed Dec-06-06 03:26 PM by Arkansas Granny
supply store and fixed him a box that included construction paper, tape, stencils, markers, paper punch, rulers, etc. He got more enjoyment out of that gift than you could imagine because it let him use his imagination. There are few things that kids that age love more than cut, color and paste.

A friend of mine fixed her young daughter a dress up box. She scoured thrift shops and yard sales for "dress up" clothes and accessories. It never lost it's appeal.

A neat thing about both of these suggestions is that they can be added to and upgraded easily.

26. great idea! You know what's funny, is a lot of the time when people give kids a really expensive
gift in a big box, they ignore the gift and play in the box.

gifts, I found one of the kids having a blast playing with the discarded wrapping paper and ribbon while he completely ignored all the new toys. Go figure!

13. My six year old
is getting lots of sporting equipment this year.

Get her a bat and a ball (to adress the tomboy side) and then get her a few really cheap (like discount store cheap) plain sweatshirts w/ fabric paint.

My daughter loves to make her own t shirts, night shirts (just really big adult t shirts) and sweatshirts. We buy fabric paint for writing and drawing and we buy dye so she can tie dye everything.

I used to work for a company where that game would be left nearby the interview table *which doubled as the conference table, lunch table, computer repair table* and if interviewees would try solve it while waiting for the interviewers, it was a big plus.

I was and still am a total girly girl, so I can't really help with "tomboyish" gifts, but since you said she likes "princessy" stuff too, I think the sporty kind of barbie would be good. :) :hi:

The Only Hearts Club dolls, soft posable dolls that they have at Target and my good toy store (bit smaller than Barbie, easier to dress, and soft), plus more clothes for them. Here's the link for Target:
http://www.target.com/gp/browse.html/ref=sc_fe_l_1_1041576_22/602-4255091-0116654?ie=UTF8&node=16300361

Clothes for her knock-off 18" American Girl doll.

Books.

A great place to shop for kids toys is Tuesday Morning. They carry good stuff, and you'll get it much cheaper there.

There is some kind of cool arty toys that are similar to tinkertoys with lots of colors and animal prints, and odd modernistc shapes - sorry I don't know the name, but someone will.
