Woman's flatulence forces plane to land
unbelievable ...

NASHVILLE - In case of emergency . . . pull finger!

Flatulence brought down an American Airlines flight early Monday. It is believed to be the first incident in which gastrointestinal gas has forced an emergency landing.

American Flight 1053 was enroute from Washington Reagan National Airport and bound for Dallas/Fort Worth, when alarmed passengers reported smelling struck matches, Lynne Lowrance, a spokeswoman for the Nashville International Airport Authority told the Tennesseean newspaper.

Despite the odoriferous menace, the plane landed safely. The FBI, Transportation Safety Administration and airport authority responded to the emergency, Lowrance said.

6. this is the TSA getting back-fired upon...
I know someone with Crohn's disease who is extremely gaseous and embarassed about it and does light matches to drown out the odor.

18. There are so many fragrance sprays available -- hard to believe that
Edited on Wed Dec-06-06 11:55 PM by Radio_Lady
people light matches, or even have them available. Maybe smokers do. I guess it's the sulfur smell that overcomes the methane smell.

The real question is: How did she get MATCHES on a PLANE? Was she arrested for that?

3. Is there any tie to W's love of farting as humor?
Could he rip one big enough to ground AF-1?

5. Too bad she couldn't blame it on the dog
Let that be a lesson. Airlines should not, I repeat SHOULD NOT serve baked beans with the in-flight meal.

Damn plane must have turned into the campfire scene from "Blazing Saddles".

7. It was the smell of struck matches, not the farting, that caused them to decide to land.
Not that the media would EVER let the facts get in the way of an otherwise amusing story, no siree.

9. Yep - god forbid they report what happened, even if it means skipping a 'clever' joke
I'm actually a bit surprised they left her name out; I'd think that bit of public humiliation would be icing on the cake for these 'journalists'.

13. They did report it
Even in the dubiously sourced story cited in this thread, what actually happened is in the third paragraph. But, of course, most people don't bother to read that far.

Journalists do not set out to humiliate anyone in reporting a story. It's likely that the woman's name was not noted because the airline didn't reveal it.

19. I did read the whole article - the woman's name is not in it
And I have no difficulty believing that the kind of 'journalist' who would start a story with a 'pull my finger' joke would grab the chance for some public humiliation in a New York minute. (You'll notice that I put 'journalist' in quotes, to indicate that the hacks who wrote this story - and their ilk - do not represent what that term ought to mean.)

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding your post, but it sounds as though you think my comment on this 'journalist' was unwarranted - and perhaps you're trying to accuse me (erroneously) of being too lazy to read beyond the second paragraph. If that's the case, I can't agree that you have much of a case in defending a 'journalist' who pushed what actually happened down to the third paragraph to make room for fart jokes up top...

21. That's why I said 'dubiously sourced'
The Reno G-J story has no byline and doesn't follow Associated Press style. I'm tempted to believe it was posted by some "citizen journalist."

23. Then we agree - the piece in question is a poor excuse for journalism
and the author is a poor excuse for a journalist...

20. The source's headline is untrue and misleading.
If a news source thinks it's important enough to report, it should be done accurately, starting with the headline.

Woman's abstinance divorces dickesh stands,
yo man's ignorance horses flatulance grand,
but no great forces drive the plane at hand,
rather foolish morsels eat that yonder man.

Never entwined, never forgotten
always been eaten, ideals be rotten.

mist. No problem getting a citrus mist non-aerosol sprayer on the plane. Purchased at Walgreen's, or Bed, Bath, and Beyond, also a choice of other fragrances at full service car-wash stores or other drug stores. Look in the automobile accessory department. Just remember to get the smallest size, non-aerosol so you can get through security.

I heard this story in the AM on Fox, I think. Of course, one of the early morning anchormen giddily blurted out the kid's refrain...

"THOSE WHO SMELT IT -- DEALT IT!"
