Know what I'm getting real sick of?
I'm not going to necessarily post a link, because that might be considered calling out a particular Duer, and it would also lead to possible flame wars, and I don't want to be responsible for that.

However, I will say that I have noticed to others and to myself, a slightly sassy and snarky tone in reply posts by newbies that are completely uncalled for. They are not liking the inclusion of pictures or the way others have of expressing themselves. It's not rampant, but I've noticed. I've written their names on a post-it that is stuck to my monitor. These aren't necessarily trolls, just those who come across a bit... a-holish.

Now, let me make another comment regarding the word "newbie." I don't want every new poster to read this and think that I'm some jerk who automatically thinks that because I've been here over two years, I'm somehow now qualified to judge every single poster who has recently joined. And it's not about have a political disagreement. It has nothing to do with that at all.

My comment is that I have seen some pretty snarky and rude remarks. It's almost like they can't quite be nice to "liberals," but don't want to be tombstone right away, either. However, I won't be surprised if I check on their user name in a few months and find a virtual graveyard of tombstones.

Ok. That is all. Just needed to vent. YOu don't even have to reply, I just wanted to get that off my chest.

33. Yep, I have two.
This is my dwarf Darwin. He has the sweetest personality and loves to cuddle.

And this is Elfie (my stepbro named her). She's a Rex/Dwarf mix...

They're in their backyard playpen there, but they actually live in the garage. Soon they'll move into the house again for the winter (once their water bottle freezes, they become house bunnies).

10. Hehe. So can I.
Hell, I punched one of my best friends in the face on St. Patrick's Day. It went like this:

E: Jackie, I want to headbutt you.
J: No, it really hurt last time you did it.
E: Come on, let me headbutt you.
J: No.
E: Fine. Punch me in the face.

(I punch him in the face)

Fast forward to the next day, via text message:

E: Yo, did you punch in the face last night? I can still feel it.
J: You fucking asked me to. Anyway, I only did it about 1/3 strength.
E: Oh okay. Hey, are we hanging tonight, still?
J: Yeah, I'll pick up the beer.

It's my favorite holiday. Honestly though, when I'm really pissed, it's a fearsome thing.

14. It's been said many times...
"If you see a post that seems trollish, aleert on it".

Now, if you see a post that seems funny, you write down the posters name. That's cool. It's a good idea. If you note a pattern, eventually you will reach a trigger point and alert. That's damn helpful for the mods. But understand that the mods are also looking for patterns. If you alert sooner a mod thread will get started and more eyes will watch and make notes in the mod forum. History will be gathered. Conversations will take place. Maybe IP searches undertaken, stuff like that.

Mods work hard. Users alerting are a big, big, big help. Sometimes if I see something that pings my trolldar, I alert with one word: sniff? The mods will weed through it.

Give the mods a hand. Use alert.

21. I certainly do alert- and sometimes with a note that there is a pattern and I
include links.

I always worried I was going overboard.

Sometimes there are comments that are really straddling the line. It's more of an underhanded snarky response than a direct DU Rule violation.

It was not you!

Line straddling is a clue. Hate will out, ya know? And nuking a troll after watching, waiting for them to expose a bit too much of their sickness is lots of fun!

Don't worry about it, it is helpful.

37. I am going to say something... but I will not get into a flame war with you.
This is all I WILL say:

What I read here is a kind of social alpha behavior: You're trying to point out, in a rather cliquish, high school manner, that someone else is not quite as socially "up to it" as you are. And so you're cutting that person down for something that is so damned silly that it's really not even worth my time completing this post.

40. Ok, I missed how I did that
Care to explain it to me? From my point of view I made a simple comment based on a synchronicity I observed. I got jumped on and started trying to back away from the argument in as civilly a way as I could manange. I mistakenly used a quote I often use in rights discussions which caused someone to think I was calling them stupid. I appologised and explained I meant the comment in a far more inclusive sense and was not calling him stupid. This appology was unacknowledged and the swarm came after me even further.

I am honestly interested in how that conversation got out of control.

I don't know the specific thread you are talking about, but I do know that I have come in for more than my fair share of hate-filled responses to several things I've posted (not threads I started). Thing is, I think the biggest thing these people were pissed off at me about is that I would not match them hate-word for hate-word about the subject of the thread.

I've put 3 people on ignore, and I've never had anyone on ignore before.

19. The fact is we are a big tent
Not everyone on every side of the tent see eye to eye. Frankly I wouldn't want them to. Sometimes there are going to be clashes of positions. Sometimes there are going to be major emotional issues tied up in these discussusions.

Add into this mix the fact that online communication carries with it a bit of bravado on occaisions. Snarkiness is part and parcel of most online communities. People have to be careful that it does not go too far. But some amount of toughness is required in a political forum.

28. Indeed
Feeling a bit like that myself right now. A lot of times these issues are misunderstandings. But unfortunately some people don't know how to back up and try to see how to mend such a misunderstanding. They would rather pound on a person they think has slighted them. This is not a healthy way of dealing with problems.

24. I have no problem with toughness, and can handle some amount
of snarkiness. In fact, with most drive-by insulters and snarkers, as soon as I politely ask them to elaborate on what they mean, they usually go away. But man, this week it has been pure mean-spiritedness and personal attacks and such. I think there is a difference between snarkiness and hatefulness.

And I do agree, we are a big tent, and have been engaged in some very good conversations on DU, learning a lot in the process. But that other stuff, who needs it?
