Anyone have any knowledge of the average costs of this?

The only time we use gas is in the winter, everything else is electric, and yet we still pay $17 dollars a month for service and delivery fees during the summer, when our gas is shut off.

We had them come service our meter and they charged us extra. Wtf am I paying for?

1. Not sure what your paying for, except
fattening their pockets...I save up cash, and have them deliver propane to us, about once, twice a year...I can usually get 100 gallons of propane for 150 or so, plus 15 bucks delivery....and that lasts a very long time for us, but all we use it for is our hot water heater...we have centeral heat, but we use the wood stove during the winter months. If you just use your gas/propane during the winter, save up cash through the summer, and before the prices start to inch up buy a 100/200 gallons or so, to get you through the winter time....I don't see why you are paying such a high fee...

My father/mother in law are on a plan like yours, but they pay 5 bucks a month... I think you might be getting the short end of the stick.

The bill labels it "distribution and service charges"

last years bill for this month shows we paid less than 20 dollars for this service fee and used nearly the same amount of gas.

7. My grandparents do the same thing.
It seems that you have much more ability to keep your heating costs down that way.

8. I plan on it. It just helps to have some frustration out of your system prior
to dealing with utility companies, plus some knowledge.

10. when i have to call or confront a company on something i write down
what i want to say first so i don't lose my temper and so i'll remember everything, nothing worse than getting off the phone and then realizing you forgot to ask or mention something.

11. You prompted me to look at my gas bill that came yesterday.
Gas delivery charge 20.76
Gas supply charge 19.03
On the back of my bill:

Delivery charge: The cost of operating and maintaining the KeySpan Energy Delivery distribution system.

Gas Supply Charge: The cost of purchase, storage, and interstate transmission of gas.

This does not count the cost of natural gas usage.

Should be another line: Cost of believing this baloney.

12. Keyspan, another fuck monkey company screwing it's customers
Only a couple of years ago ALL you paid for is the gas.

But guess who gave them the right to squeeze you some more?

14. Keyspan sucks ...
I moved at the end of June to a condo where gas is just for heat. The other place it was for the stove and heat. The place was not insulated and I froze, but kept the heat at 63 degrees. They would send a bill like $122.89 or something during the winter months, each month being different and it went down during the spring.

At my new place in July, they sent me a bill for $255.00. I called them and they said that I was "budgeted" and I owed this. I asked how could get a bill with a different value each month if I'm budgeted. "That's the way we work". I had to set up a payment plan and paid them off - with it off, I'd pay around $9 a month. I told them NOT to budget me, I'll eat it during the winter.

FUCKERS.

13. Seventeen dollars seems high for the summer months
I checked my bill, and my monthly customer charge seems to be $6.45, plus another service charge per therm used, which becomes less per therm the more you use. These fees are fixed, and cannot be arbitrarily raised.

The actual cost of the natural gas used is shown separately, and this varies based on the price of gas.

Then, of course, various taxes are added.
