Dick Apologizes for Race Remark
US comic Andy Dick has apologized for calling a crowd of comedy fans "n**ggers" during a stand-up stint on Saturday night. The funnyman jumped onstage during a routine by Ian Bagg at Los Angeles' Improv and used the defamatory word in an attempt to joke about Michael Richards, who hit the headlines last month for a racist attack on hecklers during his show at the Laugh Factory. But the gag didn't go down very well, leading to a backlash from Improv guests who were less than amused with Dick's remark. Dick, 40, released a statement to the Los Angeles Times newspaper yesterday, explaining, "I chose to make a joke about a subject that is not funny. In an attempt to make light of a serious subject, I have offended a lot of people, and I am sorry for my insensitivity. I wish to apologize to Ian, to the club and its patrons and to anyone who was hurt or offended by my remark."

1. This is the new thing. Say the N word, then apologize.

4. wonder if he's a friend of Richards?
because if they can get a whole bunch of people to do it, it won't seem so bad, or something, or something....

9. I have wondered - if it was just the word
that got people in an uproar or what. If he had said "You're all idiots" would people have been so mad?

It is a shame that one word has so much power.

10. Do you mean in Andy Dick's case or Michael Richards'?

They were very different incidents.

11. Both, really.
Even in different incidents - would the outrage have been the same without the word?

Would anyone have known who Richards was talking to if he hadn't said it?

12. Take Your Apology And Shove It, Dick

And that goes for the next dozen "entertainers" whose mental problems/drug ingestion/whatever makes them decide to shit-can their marginal careers by spewing vile comments. Spare us the apologies, the checking into the toney rehab places, the weepy appearances on Oprah, etc. It's all gotten really old......
