Poll question: how old were you when you first partied (got drunk)
i made a bet with my oldest child that follows all rules that at some point in high school he would party. he swears he won't, which is A o.k. with me. but, i was a good girl and i did late into my junior year a handful of times. then not at all my senior year. when i made a post about this i was surprised on the number of people that said they made it thru high school without drinking. AND they had friends that went all the way thru highschool without drinking. personally, i did not know anyone. i was the good girl.

i bet son a car upon graduation, if he didnt drink. i am assuming he would lose. now i am curious.

so, please share.

6. The first time I ever got drunk was at my brother's Confirmation party.
My cousin kept stealing pony bottles of beer and sneaking them upstairs for us to drink. I was 10, she was 12. I passed out, she threw up. My parents were not amused.

7. I clearly remember the first time I got high
My family and I were in Boston for the Bicentennial Celebration. I was 13, I had a terrible cough, and I was carrying this bottle of Vicks44 cough medicine that I kept taking little sips off of. Before I knew it I had drank about 3/4 of the bottle and I was walking around Boston with my parents, hammered off my ass. That cough syrup will fuck you up if you drink too much of it. I also remember the first time I smoked pot, about 3 years later. I remember thinking "wow, I have'nt felt this good since that trip to Boston..." hehe.

11. I was 21,
Edited on Thu Dec-07-06 05:24 PM by ChoralScholar
we were having a party celebrating a fraternity brother who had dumped a psycho girlfriend.

But that cough syrup shit - That's the most fucked up I have ever been - I was at a bachelor party of a friend - I had bronchitis, and was carrying around Robitussin. Every time I started coughing, I took a swig.

Now THAT is a different kind of drunk.

On edit, one other time I was that drunk. My choir director buddies and I were eating at the BrauHaus in Hot Springs, AR.

We each drank

2 x 1-liter Spaten Oktoberfest
1 x Bottle of Chimay
5 x Shots of Jagermeister
1 x Shot of Jack Daniels.

I was drunk that night too. But, to answer your question, I was 21 then too.

9. I was an early drunkard
First time I got drunk I was about 12 or 13 I think. My dad's annual company picnic. My girlfriend Bethany and I found the beer chest. Parents were already loaded sitting around the fire chatting. We repeatedly stole beer after beer. I thought I could fly off the swing when it was at it's peak. SPLAT! Good thing I didn't feel the pain.

39. Well, I'm a six foot four man, weighing in at more than an
eighth of a ton. I was a very straight young man, intensely studying the ministry and I believed I should expect high standards from the people around me and that I should be prepared to deliver as good as I demanded.
The Viet Nam war and my opposition to it, as well as a few other rather rude lessons of life, including watching the struggles for racial equality gave me a different notion about how people are put together.

Allowing myself and others to be perfect beings, exactly as they are and making my own choices eventually led to enlightentment and a much deeper satisfaction.

I no longer drink, by choice, although some other drugs of choice are of rather high value in an otrerwise intolerablely painful disablement.

At least here in Mississippi, until 1985. The law went into effect at the first of the month, and my 21st birthday was in the middle of the month. I had been legally drinking since 18, but was illegal for a couple of weeks when I was 20, until I turned 21.

No grandfather clause here.

23. It varied by state in the '70's.
I lived in PA where the drinking age was 21 but in NJ it was 18. A lot kids would go there on the weekends to drink and then drive back drunk. That's why one national age was needed. But I think that age should be 18.

They took me to a cast party. I was 15 years old and got plied with drinks by a guy in the cast. Of course, they were probably half in the bag themselves. Nothing bad happened; we all just went home, where I attempted to play the sheet music from the show on the piano (I can't play the piano). If you're interested, the show was "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying". I can still see 15-year old me trying to play "Happy to Keep His Dinner Warm" with one finger.

58. That's funny.
Any time after sixteen until I went to college, if I was really rip-roaring drunk, it was with my grandparents. They'd vacation myself and my sisters in Florida every spring. Underage or not, we all had drinks with our appetizers, LOTS of wine with dinner, and something afterward with dessert.

Good times. I still love pina coloadas because they remind me of my grandfather.

15. I think I was 19 the first time I ever got drunk
I had alcohol before then, usually a beer or two at family parties or holidays but never drank to get drunk. I didn't party in high school and even my freshman year of college, I went to my first real college party my sophomore year and got wasted on cheap beer and jello shots. Didn't wake up with a hangover or anything the next day...from then on I was a pretty much permanent fixture on the party scene

And I was at college. Got smashed, hung over horribly for a physics lecture early next morning. 30. Apricot brandy
I was pushing twelve. I lifted the excess that was left from a futile attempt to make fruitcake. It was not a good experience. My folks figured it out even though they did not observe the event. Mom took me to the liquor store and let me pick out whatever I wanted. I chose a very large bottle of red wine. It was nasty, nasty stuff. My folks kept it out on the counter and I was compelled over time to drink it all - something I did not anticipate would be a problem when I made my selection. I never developed a fondness of beer and I can't drink red wine to this day. I never was much of a drinker after that.

Edited on Thu Dec-07-06 07:35 PM by gemdem
I'm not kidding. My parents used to tell the story of how I got plastered at three.

My dad and my mom's uncle were clearing out a barn where my great uncle kept beef cattle. It was hard work and the men were having beer as they worked. The beer seemed to be disappearing faster than it should. My dad and uncle looked around to see my three-year old self draining the beer bottles (I liked beer then and still do). This was probably after they found me rolling around in the manure -- one toasted toddler. I guess I was quite a sight.

Well, the men handed me off to my mom and great aunt who cleaned me up for dinner. Didn't do much good though. By that point I was so wasted and tired (falling down in manure takes a lot out of a kid) that I proceeded to fall asleep face down in my mashed potatoes.

Even though there's no way that I have any memory of this, the story itself makes me smile.

38. The summer after high school ended....I came in late.
Mostly because I absolutely despised the cliquish blue-blooded whiny teen drama that posed as my high school, and because most of my good friends from high school had very strict parents (as did I, but thankfully my dad let me have a drink every once in a while).

It wouldn't have happened if I didn't get an apartment with this girl afterwards. I mixed myself the Earth equivalent of the "Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster", and made it through about 2 and some vodka mudslides before I was thoroughly trashed.

I was always more fond of smoking weed than getting drunk, although there are some negative side effects to that as well.

I've tried not to make that stuff the "forbidden fruit" to my kids like my parents did. When I was on a cruise with my kids last year, drinking age on the ship was 18 once it was away from the US. My son was 18 at the time. I told him that what he had/when/how much was completely up to him until I felt I had to intervene. I never had to - he was very responsible about it.

52. I was 12.
I had some friends who came from less than stable homes who had parents that would actually encourage them to drink and party. I thought they looked ridiculous, but they seemed to enjoy it so I decided to try it, on my own, at home by myself where I couldn't make a fool out of myself. Unfortunately, I enjoyed it immensely and it was the beginning of my binge drinking teen years.
I found out later that alcoholism runs in my family. Thank goodness I had already cooled it on the booze and settled down before I became an alcoholic. I rarely drink now, it makes me very ill, which is good, I guess.
Odd thing is, I've never tried any type of drugs, not even pot. Plenty of opportunity, just at the time alcohol worked well enough for me.

56. 21st birthday
I figured if I was ever gonna do it, I might as well do it then! I'd only had one or two drinks before that, so it was quite an experience. I've just had the occasional drink since then. It's always seeme a bit overrated to me. Besides, I have a strong contrarian streak, and can't stand the feeling that I'm doing something just because everyone else around me is doing it.

57. I was 16 and visiting a friend in college.
I was so sick. Someone should have told me that Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill isn't technically wine. :puke:

61. I sampled every liquor in my Grandparent's liquor cabinet.
I was 13 years old and was only 4'6" tall and weighed 70 pounds. I consumed about 12 ounces of hard liquor and got seriously sick. The booze irritated my stomach so much I couldn't keep anything down for three days. My grandparents traveled a lot and bought liquor as a souvenir of their travels. To this day, I hate scotch, tequila, gin and bourbon. I never drank that much again so it was a lesson I never forgot.

62. Never been drunk.
I've come close a couple of times, but I have a tendency to self-regulate when I drink. I'm not a big drinker anyway. Also, alcoholism runs in my family, and fortunately, I've escaped that family curse. But it has always made me more aware of things anyway.

I first smoked pot when I was 17.

63. When I was 5...
I had this bad habit of stealing the neighbor's beer. Bob always had a can of beer sitting near him on the curb while he worked on his car. I would ride my trike down the sidewalk past him, grab the beer and ride off guzzling from the can.

To this day, when I run into someone from the old neighborhood they love to tell the story about seeing Bob chase me down the street trying to get his beer back before I drank it all.

On my 21st birthday Bob bought me a six pack.

65. As a teenager, my parents encouraged me to drink, so I wouldn't.
It was my way of being rebellious. "No! I will not have a martini!" (Because I don't want to be like YOU.)

But after college, I got over that little hang-up and got into the drinking thing. My parents were pleased.

I drank much more between 18 and 21 than afterwards. After that drugs were my drug of choice. It WAS 1967, after all.

Longest hangover I've ever had. It literally lasted a week.

I didn't drink again until I was 21.

71. I was about 11 or 12...
My mother had a new year's eve party for the kids in the family and our friends. She bought a bunch of CHEAP champagne and beer for us while we watched a bunch of different movies. My best friend & I were so twisted that we sat in one spot giggling our asses off. But one of my cousins was even worse, he was so done that he fell asleep in the bathroom holding the toilet and singing James Brown songs.:toast: :puke:  :puke: :eyes:

72. I drank vodka when I was in 9th grade.
It was mixed with diet Sunkist and it was awful. I hated it. I drank beer when I was a senior, and hated that too (no wonder - it wasn't until a decade later that I discovered "good" beer).

I never really got into drinking as a teen.
