anybody know what 19:20 is in US or whatever you call civilian time? |
|
Thanks in advance. I get confused with time zones too, but can never make the military time transition. Don't bother giving me the formula - I seem to have a mental block about this.

Makes it much more visual rather than trying to remember to subtract 12.

11. Military time is a 24 hour clock that starts the count at midnight |
|
So, 0001 is one minute past midnight; 0200 hours is 2 am; 1130 hours, 11:30 am; 1200 hours, noon. 1445 hours, 2:45pm, 2010 hours, 8:10pm, 2400 hours, midnight.

13. Yeah I got the midnight to noon down pretty well |
|
:P it's that noon to midnight part that is the problem.
Let me ask this: If the 24 hour clock is military time, just exactly what is the other one called?

16. Well, we used to tell the baby zoomies to subtract two to get pm |
|
So, 1400 = 2pm. That more or less works until you get to 2000, then you subtract 12, ie 8pm. Until I got it down, I just visualize a 24 hour clock face; the 12 or noon is in the six o'clock position.
We called it civil or civilian time. I won't mess with you by getting into Zulu time computing.

19. It's Greenwich Mean Time. |
|
In joint operations over several time zones, you hacked on GMT or Zulu. You'll hear it used occasionally in films "Operations will commence at 0500 Zulu." which for someone in the eastern US time zone would be midnight, west coast, 10pm. Plus, we had to time and date all message traffic on Zulu time, not local. So, 24 hour clock and knowing GMT relative to local time zone.

12. So, is that 1920 in Phoenix's time zone (MST), or 1920 UTC? |
|
In MST it's 7:20 pm, but if it's UTC it's 12:20 pm...
