Well, I made the appointment with the surgeon's office
:(

for hernia repair. This was the surgeon that repaired my brother in the summer. They were running behind, which was okay by me because I was running late. Got the paperwork done, got checked by the nurse (my BP passed! :woohoo: ) then the physician came in. Did the exam, (like an engineer, reminded me of me at work) told me the...unsettling news. There's more damage (my term, for lack of a better one) and that I don't get the lapriscopic option and there's no schedule opening in December (whew!). I get the open surgery option and a 2-3 inch cut to repair me. Procedure is outpatient, roughly 60-90 mins, return home same day. Prognosis is excellent.

Next 2 appts, one with the anesthesiologist and pre-op, second is the surgery. They'll call me.

The good news, while in the waiting room, I heard the various patients talking and saying that this is one of the best surgeons in the area and you'll be in excellent hands.

I think I want to drink some beer.

1. I did it 4 years ago
Five hernias corrected laproscopically, if that is the word, he went in through the navel, put in plastic mesh, which I occasionally feel. Only operation I have ever had.

Things went well, but the recovery time was low-balled, and I am in pretty good shape. Took me more than a week to be back to full steam.

Good luck on your operation!

5. Thanks
my brother had the lapriscopic option this past summer. He took a while a recover, but his fitness level is not as high as mine. I expect to recover very quickly. This will be my only operation to date--the nurse was impressed. I left out not my only visit to a hospital, esp. ER. Having been a soccer player, I've made a few stops there. :P

7. you might be surprised
I think operations in general take more out of people than they realize. Don't expect a super-quick recovery.

2. Best of luck on your surgery

I had a wine at lunch. Do you think that counts as substitute? You know, that I was drinking for you :P

6. Exact date, no
but I'm pretty sure it'll be in January. I'll need some time to find someone to be my driver for the big day. My parents aren't in good health (which was the main reason I didn't have this done way earlier. They had major hospitalizations over the past 3 years), and the hours, if very early, may be too hard on my mom, who does most of the driving. I'm very short on people who love me or are loyal enough, and who are available, to look after me. :(

10. I had hernia repair in July of '06
3 of them, 2 forming a bridge under a third very large one. One night's stay in the hospital then home again. My surgery was done 'open' with a full abdominal incision.(I'm thinking your hernia isn't an abdominal but a groin hernia?) The pain management wasn't as good as it could have been but I did survive :) It's not that bad, really.

best wishes to you.

11. Thanks
and you're correct, it's a groin repair. It's the open surgery, but I'll have the small incision.
