Diet and exercise regimen?

Here 'tis:

Stick mainly to raw fruits and veggies whenever possible. I eat a grapefruit and a Braeburn apple every morning, sometimes with a handful or six of unsalted trail mix. In the afternoon, I eat a sandwich (usually turkey or lean ham - no mayo or salt - try for a wrap or on pita whenever possible) or some Progresso Low-Sodium soup (I LOVE their chicken gumbo!), with some fruit or veggies, such as carrots or celery. For dinner, I eat a BIG HONKIN' SALAD with olive oil and cider vinegar (no salt, but lotsa black pepper). In between, a snack of low-sugar yogurt or an apple or banana is cool. Maybe also some nuts for protein. Also, unsalted rice cakes do fine for snackin (limit yourself to four of them in one sitting). I also, when really really hungry, eat a few spoonfuls of peanut butter...and when I'm at the restaurant, I can't help but cheat by eating a few french fries here and there, but I keep it under control.

Watch for these things when perusing the boxes of food at the supermarket: Sodium (VERY bad!) Potassium (VERY good!), trans fats, saturated fats (also very very bad) Iron (Good!). Try for stuff high in vitamins, of course (and take supplements every day).

Take note that I eased into this diet gradually. The first few months, I alternated between eating like this for a couple of days at a time with a couple days of eating "normally," i.e. like greazy peeg. Eventually, the diet just took over - once I started paying attention to what my body likes and dislikes (as opposed to whatever psychological part of me eats unhealthy food for comfort), I couldn't help but indulge in the austerity of it. However, and this is important: DON'T SKIP MEALS. That'll make you eat more the next time you eat.

As for exercise, I started lifting weights again in late May of this year, and again, it was something I eased into. I knew I wouldn't be able to do five sets of deadlifts the first month or anything like that, so I did what I could day by day - avoiding the beginner's mistake of doing too much too soon and damaging my muscles. After a couple weeks of lifting five or six times a week in the mid-morning (a few hours after breakfast), I began to add resistance - 2 lbs. at a time every two weeks. I also reminded myself not to get discouraged, since I knew I wasn't going to see any results for the first two months, but just to KEEP DOING IT, no matter what.

By early september, I had lost about 20 pounds and had been integrating the "diet" part of my regimen. Late september, I was up to lifting five times a week accompanied by three sets of thirty crunches.

By october, I had begun integrating a cardio plan into my workout, again, gradually. I began by riding my bike vigorously around the neighborhood for twenty minutes twice a week - by mid-october, I had worked up to forty minutes of vigorous, continuous biking six daays aweek ina ddition to the lifting. By november, I had begun running - which at first was REALLY slow and painful - lotsa wheezing. But now I can run up to two miles three times a week...the key, of course, is EASING into this shit.

So anyways, there it is. Feel free to substitute equivalent foods and activities according to your personal preferences, and also remember, this is what worked for ME; it don't mean it'll work for everybody.

Okay, back to the salt mines!
