Who or what are your favorite fictional villains?
Whether it’s the characters that creep you out, that you love to hate or that merely intrigue you, who or what are your favorite fictional villains?

Mine in no particular order:

Kevin – Sin City

John Doe – Se7en

Sweet Tooth – Twisted Metal Series

Alien – Alien Series

Kakihara – Ichi the Killer

Pyramid head or The Red Pyramid – Silent Hill franchise

...I tend to prefer the really twisted ones.... :yoiks:

160. I'm a middle-aged woman who
thought he was just HOT :loveya: <---and the depth of my sci-fi villain-ery knowledge. I would have picked Darth Vader, but after the prequels, the guy just needed anger management! Sith was more mysterious.

Then again, I am married to a Marine :loveya:

He's the Jar Jar Binks of Sith.

He (Darth Maul) pissed me off the very first time I saw a pic of him before the movie came out.

Jesus, George, at least show some creativity and stop falling back on stupid cliches.

He has a sort of stream-of-consciousness, abstract feel about him that I like. ...there's no need for labels -- he just is. I hope he's successful in his new endeavors because it would be a sad to see his special voice snuffed out because a lack of financial backing....

247. That's not at all how I would have pictured Tywin
based on his descriptions in the books. And while he definitely comes across as someone willing to do whatever he has to do, he definitely doesn't come across as evil. In fact he's the only one in the entire damned family who's not.

I'm trying to remember if Gregore is the one they called "The Hound." If so, then he's an awesome villian, but also not entirely evil. Though in his case it's more a matter of being less evil than the Lannisters.

22. Iago from Shakespeare's Othello has always been one my favorites
Shakespeare made Iago a great villain, not because he is just evil, but because he's totally and completely amoral. He displays so many negative attributes, he is consumed by envy, but he's also smart enough to plot. And plot he does...he deceives, ruins lives & reputations, steals, and kills to get what he wants without any conscience or regrets. He uses Othello's trust to great harm, just to get Cassios position.

You have to love a villain that doesn't just lack a conscience, but has such evil and out of control desires to go with it. Toss in the intelligence to scheme and ability to act & deceive others....well, you can't ask more of villain than that.

IAGO
Thus do I ever make my fool my purse:
For I mine own gain'd knowledge should profane,
If I would time expend with such a snipe.
But for my sport and profit. I hate the Moor:
And it is thought abroad, that 'twixt my sheets
He has done my office: I know not if't be true;
But I, for mere suspicion in that kind,
Will do as if for surety. He holds me well;
The better shall my purpose work on him.
Cassio's a proper man: let me see now:
To get his place and to plume up my will
In double knavery--How, how? Let's see:--
After some time, to abuse Othello's ear
That he is too familiar with his wife.
He hath a person and a smooth dispose
To be suspected, framed to make women false.
The Moor is of a free and open nature,
That thinks men honest that but seem to be so,
And will as tenderly be led by the nose
As asses are.
I have't. It is engender'd. Hell and night
Must bring this monstrous birth to the world's light.

29. Shakespeare was a master at creating the perfect villain....
Iago is a wonderful choice and I'm glad you mention him because it reminded me of another Shakespearean villain -- Aaron from Titus Andronicus. He was wonderfully twisted as well.

LUCIUS
Art thou not sorry for these heinous deeds?

AARON
Ay, that I had not done a thousand more.
Even now I curse the day--and yet, I think,
Few come within the compass of my curse,--
Wherein I did not some notorious ill,
As kill a man, or else devise his death,
Ravish a maid, or plot the way to do it,
Accuse some innocent and forswear myself,
Set deadly enmity between two friends,
Make poor men's cattle break their necks;
Set fire on barns and hay-stacks in the night,
And bid the owners quench them with their tears.
Oft have I digg'd up dead men from their graves,
And set them upright at their dear friends' doors,
Even when their sorrows almost were forgot;
And on their skins, as on the bark of trees,
Have with my knife carved in Roman letters,
'Let not your sorrow die, though I am dead.'
Tut, I have done a thousand dreadful things
As willingly as one would kill a fly,
And nothing grieves me heartily indeed
But that I cannot do ten thousand more.

Thank you for the wonderful quote you posted!

Bijomaru from the movie Azumi.

The movie itself is pretty fun. But once Bijomaru shows up mid way through it becomes an entirely new movie. He owns the screen when he is on it.

For a great Japanese movie though consider Survive Style 5+. It even has a slight Xmas tangent to it. You will not have seen many movies like this one.

69. Can we go with a comedic candidate?

The details of my life are quite inconsequential... very well, where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds- pretty standard really. At the age of twelve I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum... it's breathtaking- I highly suggest you try it.

I was yelling at Paxton to kill the guy at the end. Torture him like he did all those victims and then kill him. I was pretty mad when all he did was cut off the dude's fingers.

Personally I would have done more.

I heard 'Saw' was another movie that would make you mad.

I believe it is Saw I, my mother saw it and she said the ending or something will piss you off. I haven't seen it yet so I wouldn't know exactly what it is.

121. You're right about Paxton....
"Do you think that there could actually be places like that though." This is the reason the movie saddens me -- it's possible.... You hope people wouldn't sink to such a level, but there are so many underground and secret subcultures within our society and the world. How else could you explain some the horrible things that sometimes come to light -- like that German cannibal from years ago who wrote to a forum looking for volunteers that would allow him to kill them. Not only did the victim willingly agree, but the murderer had several other offers from people who wanted to be victims and others who wanted to attend the event. Some more info here: http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,,714339,00.html

I had the displeasure of seeing Saw I, not the others, and I have to agree with your mother the movie will piss you off. The actions of some the characters were baffling... I don't want to give away any spoilers if you do plan on seeing it, but the suspensions of disbelief in that movie were amazing....

(The actor is James Cromwell.)

There's no way in hell all that stuff would fit into even a 3-hour movie.

But still, the movie stood very well on its own. And Vincennes getting shot shocked me, too. Have you read any of Ellroy's other stuff? I loved American Tabloid and will start reading The Cold Six Thousand (the sequel) as soon as I can devote an insane amount of time to it.

141. Having his whole network destroyed
and being literally stabbed in the back by someone he'd betrayed yet believed still loyal, losing almost everything and fleeing to Europe in a stolen wheelchair, paralyzed from the waist down for some twenty-plus years.

He'd never seen himself as vulnerable, or even seriously examined his motivations for doing what he did. He lusted for power, and was smacked down for it, then, once he escaped his prison, he showed his old enemies that he hadn't changed a bit. Imprisonment didn't teach him anything. He still had his lackeys and simply nursed his bitterness through the centuries.

When he escaped he thought he'd be able to climb back on top of the pile, but discovered, much to his surprise, that humans weren't the primitive savages he remembered. They were more like his own kind than he ever imagined.

In his last defeat he lost everything, and had to crawl away alone and broken. And it gave him a lot of time to reflect on his mistakes. He lost most of his powers and had to depend on humans to help him out of kindness, not fear.

By the time the big war came, he had recovered somewhat, and felt he owed something to the humans that had given him aid in comfort. He found himself on the side of the good guys and discovered he liked that feeling even more than being the master of all he surveyed.

But he'd done some really screwed up things and knew that just that wouldn't begin to make up for it. So he went on a search for redemption.

I loved him as a villain, but I really enjoyed turning him into a hero in the end. Especially considering he has to walk on eggshells around certain people, who'd soon kill him as look at him. And even as hard as he would be to kill, at least one of those people would be quite capable of it.

183. Not all of it is actually written, though it's hinted at...
There's about two hundred and fifty years between his last appearance in my Infinity: Earth books and his reappearance in my upcoming Infinity: Empire novel. A lot happened to him in that intervening span, of course, but I haven't gotten too much into detail on it yet. He's one of many characters that make the whole universe what it is.

The hero in my very first novel becomes more of a villain in my 4th, which was an interesting twist. She's not really so much of a villain as a powerful figure who decides the ends justify the means and ends up pissing off a VERY dangerous woman in the bargain.

I've really tried to make my characters as human as possible, even though they're all superhuman to one degree or another. It makes for some amazing plot twists that surprise even me from time to time.

116. My Top Three
The Witch King of Angmar (the chief of the Nazgul in Lord of the Rings). He terrified the living daylights out of me as a child (still does) but I always found him fascinating because, in a strange way he became as much a victim of Sauron as anyone else through the Nine Rings.

Glory from Buffy rocked my world, as did Spike. I love how Joss Wheddon screws with your brain regarding villians, and expectations of what villians are like and I think Spike scared me more because I found him weirdly likeable.

Finally it would have to be Melisande from the Kushiels Legacy books. Because by god evil never looked quite so hot, stylish and wonderful.

The Nazgul were definitely creatures to be feared. I think that Peter Jackson did a masterful job of portraying them in the LOTR films -- especially the sounds they make.

136. "God Emperor" is probably the most challenging of the Dune series.
Most people would probably find it tedious and lacking in narrative pull, but I found the basic story of the consequences of Leto's ethically vexing decision (it really pushes the question of the whether the ends justifies the means to limits far enough that even the most idealistic person struggles with this question) very compelling. Of course, it's also much more compelling in the context of the rest of the series, as well.

The struggle that you mentioned --the ends justifying the means -- is definitely relevant for all and that makes it that much more enjoyable to read about how others deal with the conflict.

145. I love the villains on THE WIRE. Here's some of my favorites

Omar - The openly gay stick-up man who robs drug dealers blind. "Well you know a man gotta have a code." In the last episode he robs an entire shipment of drugs from a crew of drug lords and sells it back to them for .20 on the dollar.

Marlo- The evil-eyed drug lord who speaks softly but carries a big stick. He's always one step ahead of the police.

Snoop & Chris- Marlo's hit team
They "disappear" Marlo's enemies in the vacant apartments.

Snoop (this girl actually did time for shooting a woman)

Chris

This is one of the best shows on TV.

211. Glad you added yours...
I also thought the Borg Queen was a scary villain -- that whole resistance is futile thing ...assimilating everything so that there is only the will of the queen and no individuality.... And definitely Lex Luthor deserves to be on the top villains list in all his different forms -- a brilliant man who uses his intelligence for his own personal gain. Good choices.

is one of my favorite Final Fantasy stories from the games. I have been meaning to see the Final Fantasy VII Advent Children movie -- it looks gorgeous. I know these 3 have to be associated with Sephiroth somehow in the movie.
