Wesley Snipes arrested on IRS charges
December 8, 2006

OCALA -- Actor Wesley Snipes entered pleas of not guilty in Ocala today on charges of trying to defraud the government of more than $11-million in income taxes.

In a brief interview with reporters outside the Ocala federal courthouse, Snipes proclaimed his innocence. "I look forward to clearing my name ... posthaste."

Remarking on the chilly weather, Snipes said it was a "big difference from Namibia."

Snipes' lawyer, Billy Martin, said his client was the "victim of unscruplous tax advice."

<snip>

The judge agreed to release Snipes based on terms agreed to by prosecutors and defense attorneys:

He will post a $1-million bond and be allowed to return to Namibia where he is filming a futuristic Western trilogy called Gallow Walker. He must return to the United States by Jan. 10, at which time he will surrender his passport to authorities. He must live with his wife in Marina del Rey, Calif.

1. Hey Wesley!
Make them show you the statute that authorizes them by law to tax you.

Insist on it.

2. Everyone is right about that, but the problem is they just go
"Nope, fraid not" and arrest you anyway.

I lack a gundam and am not too good at pyrokinesis, so I can't see a way around that.......

3. U.S. V. LLOYD R. LONG
"A not guilty verdict came in the Eastern District of Tennessee in the case of U.S. v. Lloyd R. Long, #CR-1-93-91. The verdict came on October 15th, 1993.

This was an amazing case involving the income tax. A Chattanooga jury agreed with the argument by Long that the income tax is actually an excise tax and only applies to certain classes of people.

Nationally prominent attorney Lowell Becraft, of Huntsville Alabama, assisted by attorney Russell J. Leonard of Sewanee, Tennessee, defended Lloyd R. Long of Decherd, Tennessee. Long was charged with willful failure to file income tax returns for 1989 and 1990.

In presenting the case for the IRS, the government, represented by assistant US attorney Curtis Collier assisted by special agent Michael Geasley of the IRS, declared that Long had grossed income in excess of $49,000.00 for each year, and that he willfully failed to file income tax returns.

The defense admitted that Long had an income in excess of $49,000.00 for each year in question, and that he did not file a return. He then proceeded to prove to the jury beyond a reasonable doubt that he was not liable for an income tax, nor was he required by law to file.

6. I'm sure that will be comforting to Mr. Snipes
when he's in prison.

5. Uh, try, Amendment XVI
The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.
