Poll question: Do you buy original art and what is your gender?
Aitch and I were discussing who buys our art, then we decided to have a look at who buys it broken down by gender. Interesting results. Then we talked about how much art we each have bought in the past year. Interesting results.

6. I didn't start buying art until I had almost graduated.
Bought a ceramic sculpture. I still enjoy seeing it.

I am a female
and I create art, and try to sell my own art. :) I also buy art....affordable art. Like a piece of pottery or a limited edition print.

8. My dear swag........
I am, so far, your sole "other" vote....

I make my own art, i.e. my photos.......

Plus I have one painting that my daughter did; it's on permanent loan to us......

And of course, I am female........but you knew that already!

15. We have considered it
We have gone to some art shows and have seen stuff that I wouldn't mind having. Now that we actually have space and are allowed to hang things on our wall, I really would like original art. Orignal art is still expensive to us though. We might be able to buy one original painting, but which painting would be worth that much to us, more so than the others. When you see non original paintings that look alright at the home furnishing stores for a tenth of the price of originals, buying an original seems like quite a luxury.
I know that artists spend a lot of time and use materials that aren't cheap. Of course they deserve more than $50 for their art work. It is just that we cannot afford several hundred dollars for something that just hangs on the wall. We need practical stuff first.

32. Just checking. I'm sort of art-illiterate, but I have a few pieces of
pottery. Most of the other things I buy in the realm of "aesthetics" fall more into the hand-craft sort of category.

33. I love pottery, and it certainly is art.
Many of the things I enjoy (and buy) also fall into that realm, including my birthday gift last year from my mother-in-law, a sculptor in clay (ceramic):

22. I just, last weekend, bought a beautiful oil painting for the family room
It's a portrait of a sad old sea captain with a neatly trimmed white beard and a cap with an anchor on it and behind him are some white tipped waves breaking on a rocky shore with some seagulls flying in the distance beyond.

It's the BEST!

Also, the coolest part is that it came in a frame that match's my new living room set!

Alas I am a human services worker and can't even afford quality "prints" let alone original artwork. It's a pity because I've seen some pieces I really liked over the years.

31. yes. But my husband (not a DUer) buys more than me.
Edited on Sun Dec-10-06 05:11 AM by orangepeel68
we're very fortunate not to have to argue (much) about money, but one of his favorite justifications for spending is "but it's art!"

on edit: after reading the other posts (which I probably should have done BEFORE I posted), my post reads like my husband and I are wealthy and causally throwing down thousands of dollars for art. Our stuff is mostly from art shows and artist friends and none of it was really expensive.

35. I have, but not in the past year.
When I see something I like and can afford it then I buy it. But I haven't been out to any of the boutiques or art shows around here in ages, mostly because I can't afford it right now and I don't want to be tempted by cool stuff.

36. I have purchased art.
It ranges from an oil painting from Paris, acrylics and water colors by local artists and purchased at art fairs. I have purchased photographs as well, and even have framed and hung a few of my own photos.

The latest purchase is a digital photograph that has been manipulated to look like a water color. Still haven't gotten around to framing that one.
