Chesterfield Township
Man arrested during 'Shop with a Cop' event
A Detroit man picked a bad day to try to pass a bad check, authorities say. An alleged scam artist who attempted to cash a counterfeit check in a store that was occupied by dozens of uniformed police officers was charged Wednesday with uttering and publishing. Police say Calvin Fluckes, 21 of Detroit, went into the Wal-Mart store in Chesterfield Township about 8:15 p.m. Tuesday and presented a cashier with a check for $847.83 to pay for his purchases.
Suspicious store employees contacted one of the 80 officers who happened to be in the store for the annual "Shop with a Cop" fundraiser for needy families. The officer noticed that the check appeared to be a photocopy bearing hand-drawn art. Fluckes was arrested at the store. If convicted, he faces up to 14 years in prison. Fluckes is being held in the Macomb County Jail in lieu of a $2,000 cash bond.
