college students: is your library's rent-a-cop an insufferable douchebag?
Edited on Sun Dec-10-06 02:46 PM by WindRavenX
Because holy shit, the guy at the front here at BC's O'Neil library is a prick of exponential magnitudes. The asshole harasses EVERYONE-- no matter if you literally just walked in and he's seen you everyday for the past week and half, he gets in your face and refuses to let you enter unless you show your ID. I just went out for a ciggie break, and he saw me walk out, and he still treated me like I was a fucking bum.

Goddammit.

1. Do y'all have a problem with non-students attempting to use the library?
We don't have a security guard at our library.

We have a regular police force on campus. Our campus police are bonafide law enforcement officers with the same powers as any LEO.

If you fuck up on our campus, it's the same as fucking up in any town. You get arrested and go to jail.

But back to the library thing. No, we don't have a security guard or police officer posted at the library.

6. We have like 0 issues
That's what I don't understand. If there was a sudden outbreak of problems, yeah, I would understand. But there's nothing. It's like lockdown mode because of finals, but that still doesn't explain the 'tude from him, you know?

And we have our own campus cops, thought I think technically they are part of Newton's PD.

2. Nope...
No security guard or anything, and whenever Campus Enforcement is there, they're hardly noticeable.

3. I don't think our libraries have a rent-a-cop
The University of Toronto library system is the third largest in North America, behind Harvard and the NYC public library (so they claim). I've never seen a security guard at the library. It's all staffed by research experts, librarians and students. We have 11 different libraries and I've never been hassled. Even if you set off the detector they just assume something went wrong with the scanner or that you just forgot.

I've got to do a little bragging now... while the structure of U of T is pretty fragmented and it often takes two trips or phone calls to get something done, the people are always friendly and helpful. Well, at least as friendly as they can be when they say, "no you need to go the the Arts and Science registrar, not your college registrar or your department office".

4. Haven't been to school for years,
but at our first office we parked in a municipal lot. Everyone called the old lady that manned the exit booth the parking nazi. I'd see her scowling face every day leaving the lot, and had to show my parking permit. One day, after 4 months, I forgot the permit or had it in a different car. I had to argue with her for five minutes, she wanted me to pay.

5. Our library doesn't have a rent-a-cop.
Our school's pretty small.

However, the few that we do have floating around campus are mostly seen smoking and chatting with each other.

7. This reminded me of Lt. Bookman from Seinfeld.

"Let me tell you something, funny boy... You know that little stamp? The one that says New York Public Library? Well, that may not mean anything to you, but that means a lot to me. One whole helluva lot. Sure, go ahead, laugh if you want to. I've seen your type before - flashy, making the scene, flaunting convention. Yeah, I know what you're thinking... Why's this guy making such a big stink about old library books? Let me give you a hint, junior. Maybe we can live without libraries, people like you and me.... Maybe. Sure, we're too old to change the world. What about that kid, sitting down, opening a book right now in a branch of the local library and finding pictures of pee-pees and wee-wees in The Cat in the Hat and The Five Chinese Brothers. Doesn't he deserve better? Look, if you think this is about overdue fines and missing books, you'd better think again. This is about that kid's right to read a book without getting his mind warped. Or maybe that turns you on, Seinfeld... Maybe that's how you get your kicks... You and your goodtime buddies... I've got a flash for you, joy boy. Partytime is over."

9. Your choice: an insufferable prick with a taser
Edited on Sun Dec-10-06 03:08 PM by Ellen Forradalom
Or an insufferable prick without a taser.

If he's not carrying a taser, consider yourself lucky.

13. we have a swipe machine on the library doors so no ID no entrance. If someone
walks in with another person there is a library worker at a desk by the doors asking for everyone's ID. We generally have the city police around late at night.

14. It's just a power trip.
Maybe next time (this trick works with bouncers at bars/clubs as well) before you go outside, go up to them and say, "Hey, I'm stepping outside for a smoke." That way, if they're a dick when you come back, you have the upper hand and can call them on their BS.

15. Not at my current school...
We have very noncommittal students that barely blink when you walk through. Once I flashed my video store card just for my own giggles and they never noticed.

However, my previous school was SERIOUS about keeping out nonstudents. You had to swipe your card to even enter. You could get into the lobby as a nonstudent, but that was as far as you got.
