Without a good bassist everything sounds a bit lacking. Of course, hardly anyone notices the bass player but we are really good with our fingers! We caress the strings with an occasional slap to get funky. ;)

Bass players in 2/3 of the bands in the worlds are nitwits who only switched to bass because they couldn't hack it at guitar, but they still want to call themselves musicians. the other 1/3 take the instrument seriously, but spend most of their musical lives terribly unhappy with their 2nd tier roles in the band. However there are some notable exceptions like Les Claypool, Flea, Bootsy Collins, and Jaco Pastorius. Most of the rest of your more notable bass players are also singers/songwriters who deserve more credit for that than they do for holding the root note of everything the guitarist does :)

Drummers aren't really musicians, and male singers who don't also play an instrument are lazy slackers, assholes, and/or pretty boys. Female singers are ok though.
