I need some major Lounge comfort tonight
and for practically all of next week.

This has been the worst weekend of my life. Fucking exams are all next week and I'm so notorious for procrastinating that I never study (I never learned how to study--i (somehow) was really smart in elementary school & never needed to). And I go to a smart-people school, so I feel intimidated and inferior like EVERY DAY. I almost always make bad grades on stuff because I procrastinate and I'm lazy and basically, i ride on my God-given brain and supposed "natural" intelligence. Which isn't enough now, because I almost always have a C in one class and almost never have an A in another class.

I hate this. I'm about to break because of all the stress I'm under. And, also, on top of that, my mom is being so fucking unreasonable about letting us go to the Jan. 27 protest--"There will be other ones". Bullshit. The next (big) one is probably gonna be 4th of July and I'm at camp then. And anti-war protests don't come down here to Missisippi, aka HELL. So, mom, get over yourself. To send a fucking message to the fucking asshat in office, WE'RE GONNA HAVE TO FUCKING TRAVEL!!

Fuck Mississippi and fuck exams.

thank you.

1. You Got Spunk Tinfoil Tiaras!
Procrastination isn't something I can help you with, except to tell you that it doesn't get any easier to get by on your brains if you don't study.

Good luck getting your mom to change her mind.:pals: :pals: :pals:

2. You sound like me in high school
I also didn't study and my grades weren't so hot. By my third year of college, I turned it around and started focusing, working harder, and did much better.

3. Do more studying and you will learn how.
I was like you... aced everything and assumed I was brilliant. It isn't enough as you've discovered but keep working at it and you will excel. As for your mother, there is still time to persuade her!

4. I hear you on the study problem
Edited on Mon Dec-11-06 12:05 AM by Kali
You are going to have to learn - best is to help someone else with the material. At least for me, it seems to help motivate when I have to "teach" something to someone else.

You have time to work on your Jan 27 thing, is there any kind of bargain you can enter into - what can you offer her to get what you want?

obviously I need to study typing some more

6. Hang in there, you can handle it.
I can't help you with your mom, but my impression of you is that you're really sharp and have a good handle on who you are -- and you're at DU, so I know you're really smart.

You say you don't know how to study, but you really do. If you're naturally smart but not a good studier, it's just a matter of focus and time management.

I wasn't a good studier either, but I did really well with grades and pulled out what I needed to pull out at the end. Looking back, I realize that I did well because even though I didn't study well, I picked up what I needed to along the way. It was messy and uncoordinated, but all the right stuff spilled out at the right time for a test or paper.

BUT -- I know now how much better I could have done or how much easier I could have made it if I had studied well.

Break it down for yourself -- it's no different than things are for you later in life. If you look at the entire jumbled mess, it's sometimes chaotic and seemingly impossible.

Prioritize -- What are you closest to "mastering"? Set up some quick review time for that first, then set it aside. Put it out of your mind and move along.

What needs the most work? Block off time and swear to yourself that you're not going to crack a book or take a phone call (or post on DU) during that period of time.

Maybe most important of all, what you need to know is probably already in your head, but chaos and noise can disrupt how well you can access it again. It's not much of a time commitment to take three or four minutes every few hours to sit down somewhere comfortable, turn off the lights, breathe deeply, and just exhale all the stress and noise. You'll figure out how to allot your available time for studying, and you can make the commitment to spend as much time as possible studying. But make sure you're settled and peaceful inside -- that's what keeps you sane, and that's what will let you reach those pieces of knowledge you're not sure you know right now. They're in there.

As for those people who think they're superior to you every day? I've got those too, but I know now that they feel as superior as they want, but they can't make me feel inferior. You can rise as high as you want.

Good luck on exams. Good luck working on your mom.

7. I'm sorry that you are going through a rough patch.
It's great that you've got so much going for you in the way of energy and intelligence, though. I bet you will do well in your endeavors.

And sorry if this post is no comfort. Take care of yourself. My friend Cynthia's great advice was always, "Eat good food. Laugh a lot."

8. Unfortunately, no help here...
...in a battle of procrastinators, your foo would be far inferior to mine. I basically live by the
saying, "If you wait until the last minute, it only takes a minute to do it." Remember, recognition is
always much easier than recollection, so when I study for a test, I just skim the higher points because
normally, the answer will pop out to me in a multiple choice test. And when I study for any long period
of time, I break it down like this. 40 minutes of studying, 20 minutes of anything not studying. You
sound like a very smart girl, so you'll do fine. A LT I worked for on the USS Carl Vinson once told me,
"It's a shit sandwhich. You know how to eat a shit sandwhich? One bit at a time."

10. There was a time I used to brag
but school for me is now a drag
I sometimes feel it's not my fate
to someday ever graduate

and though this knowledge fills my brain
my bosses still will want to train
it seems to me I shouldn't study
things of no use to anybody

but tomorrow I have a test
and so my doubts I put to rest
for if I quit this silly game
I'll lose my only path to fame

I never learned how to study either, but this seemed to be good for 90% of it
1) make a list of the terms and formulas
2) memorise that list
3) lather, rinse, repeat

Also get a good night's sleep and eat breakfast. Study the hour before you goto bed and you will dream of quadratic sheep.

Also, you can do a letter-writing protest from anywhere without wasting alot of time and gas. Have you added your name to Al Gore's list? He wants a million people to demand some attention to global warming. Then there's my thread about housing poverty in the Kansas forum. Is your local station gonna show that documentary?

13. Okay. Biology was today
I felt good about the discussion questions and I reconized alot of the MC (multiple choice) questions from past tests. But there was some shit on there I was confused with, but this is a 300+ point test, so even if you miss like 50 questions, your grade will probably still be good.

14. Cool. Be happy with what you did, and put it aside.
Move on to what's next-most important.

DU and your mom and planning for the march in January will all be here when the week's done. Nail the rest of your exams!

15. Why not organize a demo right there in Miss.?
What better place than down on the coast? "Rebuild Biloxi, Not Baghdad!" Civil disobedience to follow, on Trent Lott's newly reconstructed front porch... sounds like fun!

16. I live 3-4 hours away from the coast
That would be a good idea. Anniversary of Katrina perhaps?

Though the Gulf Coast is a REALLY republican area...
