I got it this afternoon, and immediately set about having it record Alton Brown, The Simpsons, and some other stuff.
When Alton came on, the DVR automatically switched over to the food network and showed it while recording, and then within seconds of alton signing off, the Simpson's was on another channel and the DVR immediately switched over to that channel.
Sweet!!
I didn't realize that they did that automatic channel switching thing (yes, clearly I knew it would have to "switch" channels to record, but I didn't know it would switch for recording AND do the switch for what channel it's showing).
And being able to rewingd while watching a TV show - how goddamn cool is that?!?!
HOLY SHIT THIS IS GREAT!!!

1. I'm glad you enjoy it, it sounds wonderful... |
|
I could use one, because I miss a lot of shows, due to me forgetting about them, especially Boston Legal, and Nip/Tuck...

10. Your cable company might be offering a deal - I only have it because of a deal |
|
I had a special deal on basic cable that ended this month, so I called the company to see what my options are, and I was able to switch to digital with even more channels for $2 less than I was paying for analog basic, and I get that deal for 12 months. The DVR was an extra $15, so I'm only paying $13 more a month for the bitchin' scenario than I was paying for mere analog boringness.

3. I don't know if I can ever live without it anymore. |
|
Do you just have the one channel or can you record and watch another channel at the same time?
We have two TV's each with a Tivo and each with 2 inputs. So we could actually record 4 things at the same time if we ever needed to.

5. I won't live without it |

I'm hooked and if a movie is 1 hour 47 minutes long, that's all it records. Beware of the auto erase feature. If there are episodes you want to keep indefinitely, go in and tell the machine to save until *you* erase.

7. I've been recording stuff for the husband while he's out of town. |
|
I work up this morning to the thought that I lost something that I wanted to hold on to. By the time I checked it was gone.
Very good advice to a newbie DVR user.

9. I can record and watch another show, or record two shows while watching a recording |
|
I don't know if I can record two shows and watch a third that isn't recording, but I imagine I probably can. I'm watching my recorded Alton while the DVR records the simpsons AND records the Blues Brothers.
Sweet!

4. The single greatest thing about DVRs |
|
is that you are know longer a hostage to the networks programming schedule. You watch things when you want to. You watch things as fast as you want to. Hate waiting for cliff hangers? Then watch two episodes back to back. Can't stay awake for that 3am showing of the Three Stooges? DVR it.
Free at last! Free at last. Thank Ted Baxter I'm free at last!

Don't know how I survived without it. I never have to sit through another episode of the Wonder Pets or High School Musical again. The little one can watch her TV when I am not there :)

8. I use direct TV with tivo- I like it. |
|
Record two shows while I watch a show I have already recorded. As soon as the HD-tivo comes out I am going High def!!!!
Make sure you turn on "suggestions", it will record shows it thinks you might like. At first it made some mistakes but it has narrowed it down to stuff I want to see. You can delete anything you don't want and also give it a thumbs down which prevents it from being recorded again. It will also prevent recording of very similar shows.
Watching tv without TIVO is so 90's........

12. You'll wonder how you ever lived without it. It's like crack cocaine. |
|
Just wait till the first time you're at a hotel or friend's house, reach for the remote and try to pause or rewind live TV and can't. It'll be almost seizure-inducing for you.
All hail DVR!!!!!!

14. Wait until you're able to time it where you can hit the "Live" button. |
|
And you skip the commercials and catch up to what's being broadcast, without missing a thing.
