Update - My daughter and the mole
I am tired, and frazzled but wanted to post...

The mole was an atypical nevus.

"An atypical nevus or dysplastic nevus (mole) is a benign growth that may share some of the features of a melanoma, but is NOT a melanoma or any other form of cancer. The presence of an atypical nevus, however, may increase the risk of developing a melanoma, or be a marker for it. A single atypical nevus may indicate a small risk; this risk increases with the number of atypical nevi present."

http://www.aad.org/public/Publications/pamphlets/AtypicalNevus.htm

The doctor seemed a bit shocked that it was that..but luckily it isn't cancer.

She is only in elementary school...BUT...they have said that it concerns them and they want her to be seen annually for screenings and that I am to call if any more of these types of moles appear and especially if the mole comes back in the same place...although they are very sure that they got all of it based on the lab report regarding the margins????

I am a sunscreen maniac and now I will be even more of a sunscreener with regard to both my kids...and yinz guys should also be wearing loads of sunscreen too!

1. Glad you caught it when you did.
How scary for you to go through this, but glad it wasn't cancer. Thanks for posting the update.

2. I Have A Big Scar From One Of Those
on my back, came back after the first dermatologist "fileted" it, that is the words he used.

The second dermatologist a few years later rolled his eyes and said it's coming off.

Luckily he was able to inject the scar with steroids to shrink it and smooth it.

:P

I'm really glad your daughter got checked out (kudos for being a watchful mom). I'm sure you're thrilled with the diagnosis. Good health to all of you ..

I too am tired, and I'm off to bed.

7. Thanks for the update bleedingheart
Is this caused by the sun?? Nonetheless, lots of sunscreen will ward off other skin cancer problems.

 for you all.

9. not sure what caused it
but it grew over the summer...and because of a history of skin cancer on my hubby's side...we need to be very cautious.

8. did they fully remove it
or only biopsy it. My son had one on his eye. He was born with it. They removed it when he was in kindergarten, but it grew back by 6th grade. We were terribly frightened by it all. We thought he would lose his eye. They did a different kind of removal and so far, so good and he wears sunglasses out in the sun. Good luck, and keep a close eye on your precious gift.
