Christmas and religion through the eyes of a 4 year old.
Last Sunday my daughter, son-in-law, and grandson Jack were decorating their tree.
Some Christmas music from a local PBS station was playing on the radio.
Very Norman Rockwell scene.

At some point the music ended and something about the story of Christmas or some broadcast religious ceremony or something came on. The grown-ups weren't really paying much attention.
But Jack was.
He doesn't miss much.

"Is God EVERYWHERE?"
"Hunh?"
"Is God really EVERYWHERE? The lady on the radio said that."
"Oh. Well, if that's what she said..."
(Mommy & Daddy are still kind of on the fence about deities.)
"So...are we BREATHING him now?"
OK, YOU come up with an answer.

Then he caught something about the origins of the communion ceremony.
"This is my blood. This do ye drink in remembrance of me."
"They're drinking BLOOD? Eeuuuwwwwwwww! That's YUCKY!!!"

I love to see the pure logic of a child's mind at work.
:-)

3. Jack never ceases to amuse and delight.
And I can't think of anyone I'd rather spend Christmas with.

5. The light went on in my head at about 8 years old...
...that a religion obsessed with crucifixion, blood drinking and flesh eating was too weird for me. My road to atheism was a short one after that.

7. I had a head start.
My mother was a rabid Catholic who sent me to schools run by nuns and brothers as soon as I could walk. I could see there was something wrong with these maladjusted sadists from day one, so it was only a small step from rejecting them to rejecting everything they stood for.

4. When my son started kindergarten, he learned the Pledge of Allegiance...
At first I was a little uncomfortable as to how to explain the "Under God" part, but then one day we were at our local grocery store, and he saw a really large American flag on a pole. He walked right beneath it, looked me dead in the eyes, and said "Mommy, look--I'm one kid under the God!"

Come to find out, he thought "God" was another word for "flag".

8. Priceless!!!
You must write that down to give to him when he is older! I can't blame you for wanting to spend Christmas with him. Children bring out the best Christmas memories for us all! Please make sure to let us know when you are free, we would love to see you and Mrs. Trof!
