The Mormons just came by. I told them the wonderful gospel of Sagan |
|
Edited on Tue Dec-12-06 07:46 PM by Taverner
Carl Sagan that is ;)
That if something cannot be proved and replicated, it cannot be known whether it exists.
That going by one's "feeling" is less reliable than going by cold hard data
And that we are very complex animals living on a small speck of planetary matter in a vast universe comprised of billions and billions (had to get that in there ;) ) of stars that may or may not harbor life on their planets...
And the update, that not only are we in a vast universe, among billions and billions of other universes - but all of this (thanks to quantum physics) is part of a huge system called the membrane.
And that all forces in the universe are either Strong, Weak, Gravity or Electromagnetism - but there may be one thing that unites them all - Strings.
Oh there is so much more to the Gospel of Sagan - but I had so little time.
After they got their heads to stop spinning, they asked whether there were any Chinese speaking folks in the neighborhood. I said yes.

1. I used to tell them I belonged to the Church of Baal |
|
and asked them to enroll their children in our Sunday School.
We'd love to have your children for breakfast - I would say, as they backed away from my porch.

3. Ah but I want to place a seed |
|
One which, years later...when they find themselves married to the woman they were supposed to marry, having the kids they thought they were supposed to have, that there might be something more to the universe than this "6 Day Plan" they had believed all of their life.

|
So that at some point they might be liberated..

There is a medium-sized Chinese speaking population in the East Bay. However, most of my Chinese-Speaking neighbors speak English as well as they do.

10. They ran away from my house once, with me calling after them to come back |
|
They asked me if I would want to know if there were a modern-day prophet.
I reached back into the recesses of my memory and started pulling out all my old Sunday School lessons. I told them that it really didn't matter if there were a modern day prophet, because I knew from reading the Bible that as long as I accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as my personal Savior then I was guaranteed Everlasting Life. So modern day prophet or not, as long as I followed what the Bible said I was good to go.
They kept on, of course.
I finally told them that they had an interesting point. "But," I said, "you guys do know that if you're wrong about this then you're going to hell for sure?" And then I laughed my evil cackle.
They didn't find it so funny. That's when they started backing away as quickly as possible.
I was hollering for them to wait, that I had more to say, but they didn't even look back. Chickenshits.

11. When I lived in Brooklyn, we never got Mormons. |
|
But Jehovah Witnesses (we called them "Jovies") were every where. I would very nicely give them a good talking to each and every time.
Ahh, the stories I could tell...

I don't trust books. They're all fact, no heart. And that's exactly what's pulling our country apart today. 'Cause face it, folks; we are a divided nation. Not between Democrats and Republicans, or conservatives and liberals, or tops and bottoms. No, we are divided between those who think with their head, and those who know with their heart.
Consider Harriet Miers. If you 'think' about Harriet Miers, of course her nomination's absurd. But the president didn't say he 'thought' about his selection. He said this:
(video clip of President Bush:) 'I know her heart.'
Notice how he said nothing about her brain? He didn't have to. He feels the truth about Harriet Miers.

17. Of course Bush has to use his heart to make decisions |
|
His brain is so small other body parts have to chip in and help.

18. actually, I think that's the flaw in Colbert's argument. |
|
Bush has no heart. His brain isn't much to speak of, but his heart is nonexistent.
