Edited on Tue Dec-12-06 10:04 PM by libnnc
I've never used one. I can't wait to try it!!

Anyone familiar with the French press method for brewing coffee? How coarse should I grind my beans?

Looks kinda like this

1. I don't
sorry.

But I will say congratulations and I hope it makes the very best coffee you've ever drunk, without being a major hassle to use. :)

:hi:

2. Yeah, you want a medium burr.
Something that looks a little coarser than sand. Shouldn't be any powdery stuff in your grind.

You can give it a try by grinding a bit, then putting it in the press dry. With the lid on, you should be able to tip the press and not have too much come through the mesh.

My favorite way to brew a cup!

3. Just got one myself --
$12.99 at IKEA, I couldn't pass it up. Makes great coffee, and I'll save a fortune NOT buying it by the cup. Sort of a medium grind seems to work pretty well.

4. grind coarsely, and use a burr grinder, not a whirly blade grinder....
You want as few fine bits as possible-- they muddy up the brew. A press makes AWESOME coffee-- I don't make it any other way now. The taste is incomparable.

9. it's tough-- just try not to grind finely....
A burr grinder is better for keeping the whole batch at an even grind. You can always decant through a cone filter if there's too much sludge, but some of the flavor will stick to the filter (seriously). Still, it's WAY better than drip coffee, even with a quarter inch of sludge in the bottom of the cup.

5. Those are great.
The last time we went out to dinner at the local French restaurant, we both ordered a cup of coffee with our dessert and we were served a small french press pot of coffee. After a few minutes, we poured. It was heavenly. Yum.

6. This is the way I do it, with help from those here.
I grind mine on almost the highest setting. (You are going to have to play around with the amount depending on how strong you like it, and what coffee you use)

I then take cold filtered water and put it on the stovetop to bring to a boil. As soon as bubbles start to form, I pour in just a bit of water, like 1/6 of the French press.

I then put the water back on the stove and bring it to a boil.

Once the water is boiling, I turn off the heat and remove the pot. I wait at least 10 seconds, until it's no longer boiling, then pour into the press.

Then I put the lid on and move to the table where I wait about 3-5 minutes, press down the plunger, then wait another minute, and pour and enjoy.

Best damn cup of coffee, ever!!
