A teenager with a Colorado driver's license was caught speeding at 145 mph on an Indiana highway last weekend, authorities said Tuesday.
The 16-year-old boy told a Porter County sheriff's deputy that he was trying to make it home so his parents wouldn't be mad at him.
"He was actually slowed up by traffic ahead, and as soon as the officer clocked him, he braked a little bit," said Sgt. Tim Emmons, a sheriff's spokesman. "He must have seen the squad car. Big oops."
The incident occurred about 12:40 a.m. Saturday on U.S. 30, a four-lane divided highway, just west of Valparaiso, Ind., about 40 miles southeast of Chicago.
The youth and his family recently moved from Colorado to Valparaiso. He obtained his Colorado license when he turned 16 in August, Emmons said.
The youth was cited for speeding and reckless driving, a misdemeanor, and allowed to drive home. It's likely that the teen's driving privileges will be suspended, Emmons said.
The boy was driving a 2004 Subaru WRX, a sporty sedan with a top speedometer speed of 160 mph.
"My speedometer does not go to 160," Emmons said. "That car's got pretty good capabilities."
He said the speed at which the teen was driving was likely the highest ever clocked in Porter County, with one exception.
"I was actually told by another officer today that the top speed they had ever encountered was 160 mph during a motorcycle pursuit with a rocket bike," Emmons said. "I have no personal experience like that involving a car."
