Poll question: Should I get plastic surgery?
Specifically, breast enhancement. I have a body similar to this:

but not even CLOSE to those size boobs. I would like to be more proportional, as I have curvy hips and butt, but B-cup boobs.

What do you think? :hi: And no, I'm not posting pics. Perverts. :D

Also, there is no male opinion on this issue in my life - this would be purely for me.

5. Fake boobs look, well, fake.
My personal thought is that there are plenty of great push-up bras and those silicone "cookies" that go between boob and bra work wonders. Either one or both could get you looking a bit more proportionate without the health risk involved in surgery.

I think it is your body and if you would feel better about yourself by adding portionality to it then you should do it. This all about how you feel about yourself and only you can make that decision. But if this would improve your self image then go ahead.

to the degree that i am happy with me just as i am.

9. These "should" votes from the guys are kind of freaking me out
Great breasts and/or a sexy figure aren't issues of size at all--a lot of small-chested women have a lithe elegance to them that would be ruined by implants, and some large breasts are less than attractive, particularly if they are fake. A B cup is nothing to worry about in any case with regard to size, in my somewhat knowledgeable experience.

61. you know, sometimes it just boggles the mind...
a woman with a D-cup states the fact that she does, in fact, have large breasts and she's berated for a 'lack of humility'. Another woman who is less well-endowed posts a thread asking if she should get breast implants...on this thread most men are supportive, while on the other hand, on another thread someone posts a picture of Fiona Apple and several men take cheap shots at her breast size and refer to how 'flat' she is.

fuckety-fuck-fuck, it's a fucked up fucking world...and these are just the supposedly 'enlightened' people.

71. It doesn't have anything to do with humility.
Is it immodest for me to say I have blonde hair? That I am 5'4"? That I am 40 years old? That I have a small chest? These are all merely facts and impart no opinion of myself, inflated or otherwise.

Same with lioness. She just said she's well-endowed. It's not a boast. It's no different than my saying I'm small-busted.

Some boob jobs do look realistic. The best looking are the ones where the woman goes up "only" a cup size, like from a B to a C... if you go from an A to a DD, you'll almost always look fake.

On the other side, I have seen a few women with real ones that many thought were fake.

13. If your body is anything like the model's
then I imagine the surgery would be a waste of money with potential health/aesthetic risks as well. With B cups, clothing fits you well, you don't lack curves and most people look at you and say, "Perfect." Women with large breasts and beautiful faces don't have better luck or happier lives, IMO.

There are risks to surgery.

16. Yes, but ONLY if you listen to your surgeon and their recommendations.
I have a friend who was totally flat after her kid, but she was curvy, she had real hips, a nice stomach, etc. But NO tits to speak of. She went a little too big, but still, she looked so much better and younger with decent sized boobs.

If you go no larger than a C cup, then yes. Stay manageable and realistic. It can be very flattering. Shop around, find the very best surgeon you can afford from personal recommendations.

19. In their current state, do your boobs present a problem?
Do you feel self-conscious about their size? Is it difficult to find clothing or bras that fit?

If your answer to both of those questions is "no," then I would advise against it. Surgery is surgery, recovery is recovery, and body alteration is permanent.

You are a beautiful person, and your body is the perfect vessel for all that is you. Wear it proudly.

25. Nope
I was at a crowded club in West Hollywood standing in line waiting for a drink when I felt what was obviously the pointed end of a Nerf football pressing into the back of my arm. I turned to look and was surprised to see that it was in fact a breast. Disconcerting, you know, a boob that feels like a football. The girl said "scuze me" and I said "no problem," but I still think about it. I mean, hell, if you can't even feel them yourself when they are pushed up against a total stranger, what?

I like boobs as much as any guy, but real small always beats any size fake.

I'm not a big fan of the plastic, myself, but I wouldn't dream of telling someone else what they should do with their own body. I think there's alot to be said for variety in body types. I'll never look like a Victoria's Secret model, because I'm a B-cup as well, but they're what nature gave me, and I think they're fine. I believe in being the best person I can be through healthy means, and I don't consider surgery healthy for myself so I wouldn't do it, but I wouldn't malign someone else for doing it, either.

29. My vote is no. After working for surgeons who see tons of breast cancer patients ...
it seems to me that it's best to leave nature alone. You have to think about getting very CLEAR mammograms in the future, if you've not already started getting them. You're healthy, and if you have a body such as the one in the picture - take care of it. In my opinion - her breasts look too large for her frame, anyway. Hope this helps.

It's only in America where large boobs are put on a pedestal. The french aesthetic is that the perfect breast should fit nicely into a champaign glass, and I agree with that.

My best friend had it done last May and IMHO went from a 10 to a 7 (for a 51 year old.) It is very obvious she had it done. She went from a perfectly petite size 1/2 51 year old who looked 35 to an udderly middle aged woman. I could PM you before and after pics if you'd like. (Or anyone else either, I am still looking to validate my opinion.)

When my friend had it done I did a lot of research on it. Most boob jobs require secondary surgery within 5 years. It is not permanent and they last about 10 years. Then you have to either unimplant and scar tissue removed or reimplant. There are also quite a few possible side effects. Here's a good site to start with, read some of the personal stories http://www.breastimplantinfo.org/ . Most sites you see are put up by plastic surgeon organizations, surgeons or manufacturer's so be wary that they are trying to make a sale.

I wish you the best of luck with your decision. I don't know how old you are but believe me, most middle aged women would love to still be "perky."

edited: spellun and to add, insurance doesn't cover it but insurance also will not cover and subsequent surgery needed due to complications or deflation.

58. thanks for that link
here's an important paragraph, I've read this woman's story before:

http://www.breastimplantinfo.org/per_stories/kacey.html
"Immediately after surgery, I began experiencing weird, shooting arm pains. Then slowly, every joint/bone/muscle in my body was in excruciating pain. I was exhausted all of the time, had no energy, experienced hair loss, and had pains in my chest, heart, and ribs. I had trouble remembering things and thinking clearly. The list goes on and on---before implants, I just had allergies.

I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondilitis (arthritis of the neck and spine), fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue syndrome. My doctor thought silicone was the problem. I lived in doctor's offices, I was bed-ridden, and I was disabled. (I've got the handicapped parking pass and am waiting on my lawyer's appeal for my disability claim).

My "safe" saline breast implants cost me everything. The surgery to put them in cost $4500, and to take them out was the best $6400 my parents could have spent. Yep, my parents helped me, because I was still paying the cost to have them put in

"I never thought about my implants being dangerous. Almost all of my doctors agreed that my health problems were not related to implants. The fact is, these saline implants are encased in silicone, and silicone can be harmful to your body! The silicone shell is enough to cause autoimmune diseases and various health problems. I was tested for silicone poisoning, and I came up positive."

I don't know if there are accurate statistics out there as to how many women have these kinds of problems. Of course it is up to the individual woman to weigh the risks and decide.

Take that as you will, but I just think altering one's body through surgery is something not to be done lightly. I would only do it to repair a defect. A real defect, not an imagined one.

Edited on Wed Dec-13-06 01:49 PM by amitten
That's one thing a lot of people will never mention, but it's the truth. Breast implants are not permanent. And it's no easy surgery...if you get them, resign yourself to several more surgeries during your lifetime. Also, ask yourself if you can afford that financially.

Also, you feel that your B cup isn't "proportional", but actually for a small frame that is the average American breast-size. It's the normal size for your frame...not a C or a D cup, which is actually disproportionate. I think you'd look too top-heavy with big boobs.

54. Where in the world do you get that figure?
Wikipedia says otherwise:

The only available literature with longer term available MRI data on single lumen 3rd/4th generation silicone implants comes from Europe and has reported silent rupture rates of at least 8% to 15% at about 10 years.<21> <22>.

That is NOT "every 7 years". Or even "every 10 years" (note the 8-15% rate).

Now while it's true that

the implants "are not lifetime devices" and that most recipients will need at least one additional surgery to replace or remove their implants. Rupture is one reason for reoperation. Among the causes of rupture are damage during implantation or other procedures, trauma to the chest, and the pressure of mammograms.

that's hardly "several more surgeries". And note that it says "most recipients", not "all recipients".

59. 25% require additional surgery within 3 years
High complication rates have been well-documented. A Mayo Clinic study in the United States, for example, found that 25% of women with breast implants suffered local complications requiring additional surgery within five years. Studies by implant manufacturers in the U.S. have reported that most reconstruction patients and a large proportion of augmentation patients report at least one serious complication within three years. In addition, there were 103,343 adverse reaction reports regarding silicone breast implants and 23,454 reports for saline implants received by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration between 1985 and 1996.

A new study by researchers at the Centre of Excellence for Women's Health in British Columbia finds relatively high complication rates for breast implantation in Canada as well. Data collected from a study group of 147 women who had undergone breast implant surgery were compared to data from a non-implant comparison group (583 women). The study reported that women who have or have had breast implants:

• visited doctors and specialists significantly more often.
• were more than four times as likely to be hospitalized, and
• experienced more hospitalizations over the study period than women without implants.

http://www.breastimplantinfo.org/what_know/bihlthcomp.html

and:

How long breast implants last
It is unpredictable how long an implant will last. Some implants break within a few days, weeks, or months, while others last for many years.

Like most new products, most implants seem fine for the first few years. Think of implants as being as reliable as a car – problems can happen anytime, but the older they get, the more problems you are likely to have.

The FDA found that by the time a woman has implants for 10 years, at least one of them has broken. However, it is not always obvious.

43. If it's purely for you
then what we think shouldn't matter.

That said, I think that you'll find it easier to buy clothing if you stick to your natural size.

Also, you should know that the surgery is painful, and if you don't follow instructions TO THE LETTER you can run into all kinds of problems with your implants.

If you do decide to get the surgery, be sure to research your surgeons thoroughly. It turns out that anyone can be "board certified." What you want is someone w/ years of experience performing this specific surgery with excellent results. Settle for nothing less.

44. It's up to you...
I'm getting a reduction next month. Bigger boobs may seem like a good idea, but honestly, they are a pain in the ass. Finding clothes to fit when you are not as big anywhere else is horrible, they are heavy, it's just not worth it. Larger breast do attract attention, but it's usually not the attention you want. Remember, the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence.

Of course, if you are gung ho to do it, you should. I'd say if you have always wished they were bigger and you really think it's what you want, go for it. I've got a list of friends wanting to arrange a transfusion, so I understand where you are coming from!

47. Get a pair of the silicon breast "enhancers" and wear them around
inside your bra for a while to see if you like the look and feel. Then decide. Although I've joked about getting a great big set of shiny new hooters when I win the lottery, I don't think it's something I would ever do. For me it's too much surgery for something that I care very little about, but I would never presume to tell anyone else what they should do.

I do, however, wish mine were a little less susceptible to the effects of gravity. :(

You're probably not ready to get implants.

Otherwise, it is your decision and you have to live with the results.

I'm more a leg/butt/hips guy, by nature.

For all I know, your 'curvy hips and butt' may be nicer even than hers. And B-cup boobs can be perfect, even if they don't cut as dramatic a line in clothing.

I've seen your pic... you're beautiful either way, so for me, it seems like more trouble than it could possibly be worth, and you're left with the fact that they aren't all natural. Then again, it's not for me....

Oddly enough, my exgf is getting new improved breast today, as we type. I'm curious how this will change her life, as she literally had no breast; she wouldn't even really be an A-cup.

Your body will change as you get older. What you once considered faults will become assets. Accept your body and work on the things that make you healthier such as diet and exercise.

As the other ladies have pointed out, clothes won't be as easy to fit with larger breasts. Shirts and dresses will hang differently. Get a padded bra and see if larger breasts are important enough to go under the knife.

Just because you can doesn't mean that you should.

When I finally give up the ghost on having more kids, I am gonna go and do some remodeling! Reduction, evening out, and a lift, dammit, I WILL have perky boobs some day instead of the sloppy girls I have now, who are usually looking at the floor  . A good friend of mine went from a small B to a big C a couple years ago and she says the confidence boost was well worth it. She has a small frame, but they look and feel (yes, she made me feel them) VERY natural.

86. If big boobies will make you happy, go for it.
Just make sure you know what you want out of it, and that the enhancement will actually give it to you. I knew a woman similar to you who had the surgery for proportionality, and she loved it. One of my sisters had a boob job years ago because she wasn't happy with her body, and after the surgery she realized that it was the same body, with bigger mammaries. They didn't help her self-conciousness, and she had them replaced with smaller implants last year (the implants apparently stretched her, so total removal would have left her flabby).

90. Well, since you're asking for opinions, I have to say "no".
I am a man, and to me small and natural is far, far better than large and fake. Also, I have a friend (who is also a beautiful woman) who had breast implants that she really didn't need, imo. They looked like fake balloons pinned to her chest for a while, then the implants "dropped", and she actually looked very good and natural for a while, then after while they seemed to migrate into her armpits and they looked horrible.

On a seperate note, I've seen your pics posted in the lounge, and in my humble opinion you are a beautiful woman who needs no cosmetic surgery whatsoever. :hi:

91. The Scarlett picture looks airbrushed...
although I'm not sure. I really don't pay attention to actresses' chests. Clive Owen's crotch, on the other hand... :P

I am 5'8" with a pair of C-cupped breasts. Before I gained my grown-woman-hippy weight, I was closer to a B-cup. My sister, on the other hand, sports a pair of au naturale 40 DD breasts. She has never been comfortable. B-C cup breasts really aren't bad, and as you age you will probably fill out a bit more. But my best suggestion is hitting the weight bench and strengthening your chest. Not only will your body appear more proportional, but your bust area will be more pronounced.

So I vote "no." If it ain't broke, don't fix it. :hi:

They look really icky as you age. I've seen lots of older women who look like they have two baseballs glued onto their chest because the rest of their body has changed and the fake part doesn't.
Most of them regret doing it. The silicone implants can leak and just because the FDA says their harmless doesn't mean shit, IMO. The water-filled implants can spring a leak too, and if they do it's like a tire blowout - they spill out fast. You end up with one boob flat until you can go back into surgery and have it replaced.
You can end up with a wound infection that will scar you for life...

Bottom line - WHY bother? You look fine. It's bullshit that women think they have to reach for perfection physically. You are enough. Period.

I've always had this in the back of my head, too. Not that I plan to actually have surgery, but I would love to be more proportionate. I have a really broad chest and some meat on my thighs, and then a small rack. When I am in good shape (e.g. when I get to the gym 4x a week regularly), the best adjective to describe me is athletic. I'm not what anyone would call lithe.
I've always thought an upgrade would balance me out more. In my case, it probably would.

That said, I still won't do it. But I understand your motivation.

then you don't need to get implants. Most guys would prefer someone who has natural b cups over someone who has implants. The only time I would say that a breast implant would be justified, is if you are completely flat chested, but its your body so do what you want.
