Beagle Dies In House Fire After Alerting Family

A family's pet beagle that saved the family's life after alerting them about a fire did not make it out of the house alive.

The house fire broke out about 10 a.m. Tuesday in a two-story home on Bernwood Court.

The dog scratched at the door from the inside of a bedroom to alert the family.

More than 50 firefighters from Mentor and surrounding communities responded to the fire. The house was a total loss. The cause remains under investigation.

When I read the story yesterday, they said the dog was missing, I was hoping it just ran. I guess not.

firefighters were gathered around someone on the ground with oxygen--it was our beagle. They revived her, then one of our town's police officers turned on her squad car lights and drove her to the emergency vet! She lived and is giving us joy still. We did lose our cat, and the firefighter who tried to save her was crying at the loss. I have never been so moved. (My kids and I took them all doughnuts and milk the next day, even though our house was in a shambles.) Condolences to the family.
