"Is the place next to Germany called Austria?"
My first-grader just asked me this. I have no idea where the question came from, but I was impressed.

3. No, nor did I explain that Germany borders more than one other country...
I was surprised she knew about Germany and Austria and their proximity. Most kids her age don't even seem to know where Canada and Mexico are.

I may print out a map of Europe for her to look at, though. She'd like that.

4. Tried to explain where Latvia
was to a 48-yr-old yesterday. Started with the Baltic, then to Finland vis a vis Russia. It went, well, pretty well.

Geography was my favorite subject, even in first grade. Grew up with maps and Natl Geo in the house.
