Anyone here tried the new Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 yet?
I'm a Firefox user, but some site I go to don't work right with Firefox, so I'm forced to use IE6 every so often, so anyone tried it? Find any problems with it yet (other than that it's from Microsoft and and it's probable really lame).

Any, sites IE6 compatible, but NOT IE7 Compatible?

3. I'm using it now - haven't noticed any problems except that a bunch
of the buttons are in different places, so it's taking a bit of time to get used to. Haven't noticed any major improvements, either, although the tabs are pretty cool (and I guess the phishing filter is cool, too, if it's actually doing anything).

5. I've been using it forever now
Since the Beta version came out last year. The Beta was full of flaws. But the official browser is great! I like it better than Firefox; and have experienced no problems whatsoever. Just keep in mind that when you decide to install it, do it at a time when you have no use for the computer, installing the browser took me about two hours, because it had to run all sorts of updates.

6. You can get an IE tab for Firefox
just look for it in their software files.

IE7 is an improvement, though, combining the new tab feature Firefox already has with a different format up top that gives you a much larger area for page viewing. Everything moved, so it's a little hard to get used to at first, feels like somebody moved the food dish.

It's also a hacker magnet, so I use it sparingly. There's nothing like success to attract creeps.

7. I HATED it. It bogged down my system and made surfing almost impossible with its constant
security pop up. I have a perfectly fine security filter, AVG and therefore my own settings and it wouldn't let us run activex, view certain sites, etc. Like a bad conservative daddy...And the sites it was blocking? Like ellegirl.com a teen magazine site my daughter loves. Stuff that simple.

I uninstalled it after trying it for a week. IE6 is just fine. I read up some reviews online and found many others had the same problems. It's just not ready yet and too big-brotherish.

25. My thanks also... Why isn't 2.0 an automatic upgrade??
Just downloaded it also. I'll check out the release notes later and see what else I can do with 2.0.

As for IE7, I'm too much a fan of Firefox to ever go back to The Hacker's Favorite Toy. I only use IE7 as a last resort and I've had no problem with IE7 but since I use it so infrequently I have no opinion.

28. I just came on this thread by chance.
My Firefox is 1.5.0.8 . I hit "check for updates", and the answer came back: "None available at present". I tried your URL, and saw a 2.0 button, but no "Update" one. If I download & install it, will it overlay on my present version, or will I end up with TWO Firefox browsers?

I really wish I had waited before downloading some of the plug-ins though. Some sound a little complicated, and would require my full attention, which I'm not ready to give.

9. It's okay but I won't leave Firefox for it.
I upgraded on my cousin's computer to keep the system current.
She complained that some sites like Yahoo! behave differently
and one MSIE-only site stopped working altogether.

I've encountered only one site that didn't recognize it as a
supported browser, but I still use Firefox most of the time.

11. I like it. Had some problems with the Beta, but the real version is good.
I've stopped using Firefox because of IE 7. I had a lot of problems with Firefox on my favorite pages, either jumbling the format or not loading properly. I would paste the address in IE6 for those pages, but it was becoming a chore. I tried IE7's beta, and ran into similar problems as with Firefox.

But now it works fine. It's easier than switching back and forth, the design is easier to use and less distracting to look out than Firefox. The tabs work fine. I understand that it has the security issues of all Microsoft, and I hear it's slower than Firefox, though not enough so that I can tell. For now it's my browser of choice. Let me know when Firefox upgrades again. :)

15. Yes, I have an important work related site that won't run on IE7.
Edited on Thu Dec-14-06 12:25 AM by Buck Rabbit
Fortunately it does run on Firefox 2.

Were I to do it over again I would have upgraded Firefox to 2.0 but kept IE at 6.0 for another couple of months.

...and get some "average Joe" (or average Jane) opinions about it.

That forum has it's place, but I'm not looking for tech help, just opinion or soon to be common knowledge advice here.

23. It's okay, but don;t use the RSS Reader in it.
IE 7 is an okay browser. Not horrible, not great.

But the RSS Newsreader they include in it is terrible. It kept jamming up my computer trying to constantly update feeds.

26. I downloaded it and used it
for about a week. Had no problems but just didn't like the format. Some buttons were missing in the toolbar, it was annoying and took more space on my small laptop screen. It seemed a bit slower, had to try pages a couple of times before it would connect. I'll give it a few more months before I try it again.

27. From a user standpoint, zero problems. From a developer standpoint...
AAARRRRGGGGGHHHH!

It's hard to blame the IE7 team (it's a good browser), but the decision to abandon some IE7 quirks really kicked developers in the nuts. The problem with IE4-6 is that it wasn't really standards compliant, but MS generally had a bunch of proprietary tricks available to work around this incompatibility. This generally meant that complex sites had two sets of code...one for IE, and one for everything else.

MS really did do a good job trying to make IE7 standards compliant. They tried, and I give them credit for that. Unfortunately, they DIDN'T finish the job, and there are still lots of glaring standards incompatibilities. This wouldn't be a problem, but they ALSO took out the workarounds that permitted earlier versions to work properly. While this is good for business (I've had nine clients contact me for site upgrades since IE7 was released), it's also a huge pain in the arse.

From a user standpoint, it's a good browser...if you have a reasonably recent computer (2.2Ghz or faster, and no less than 1GB of RAM). If you're running IE6 and your system is fast enough, I haven't seen a legitimate reason NOT to upgrade. If you're running Firefox, on the other hand, IE7 doesn't really offer you anything you don't already have.

Oh, and let me say one thing about Firefox. FIREFOX 2.0 SUCKS. I don't know WTH the developers were thinking, but I've had more Firefox issues with 2.0 in the couple months since it's released than I had with ALL previous versions COMBINED, and I've been a Firefox user since Firebird 0.7. We've performance tested it at work and PROVEN that it loads and runs slower than 1.5, and it consumed far more memory. Sadly, Firefox seems to be falling victim to it's own success. Firebird was originally created as a fork off the Mozilla tree in protest to Mozilla's slowing performance, feature creep, and bloat. Today it looks like Firefox is the one getting bloated. I wonder how long it will be until someone forks it again, stripping off all the bloated, memory sucking crap to recreate the pared down high speed browser it was intended to be.

33. Thanks for the "developer" view. Do you think it's going to be harder...
...for Hackers too? From what you report, it sounds like they made some needed improvements.

Sorry to hear about your problems with Firefox 2.0, I just installed it, and other than wishing I hadn't installed the "FoxMarks" plug-in (it keeps bugging me to set it up, which I'm not ready to do) It seems to work fine for me and seems to have a few nice new features.

If you don't like it, why not contribute your input to the Firefox project?

Also, someone above just gave me a link to the "Sea Monkey" project too. I haven't tried it yet, but might soon. Any opinion on the Sea Monkey project?
