Dumb Freecycle "wanted" post of the day: |
|
(snipped)
>I am in need of several things for the family and a neighbor
>we need a couple working tv sets for the kids rooms they do not >have to look fancy just working.
I don't know...I grew up without a TV in my room. Hell, I don't have a TV in my room now.
How can anyone post, presumably with a straight face, that they "need" TVs for their kids' rooms?

My parents would have laughed at me if I asked them for a television in my room.
I mean, WTF?

3. I bought one at a garage sale for $10. When I was in college. |
|
My parents still really didn't want me to have it when I came home for summers, but concededed there wasn't a good reason.

5. It was financial reasons for my parents. |
|
Hell, it was a while before we got a color television.
I was born into a working class family. My dad didn't earn enough to buy us stuff like our own television sets.

8. For us, it was a combination of $ and "can't you read or play outside for a change?" |
|
My sister and I (especially, I) watched entirely too much TV -- bedroom TVs would have been worse.

Hell, I watched WAY too much television myself, growing up. I'd never have left my bedroom if I had my own televsion. I wasn't a big "go outside and play" kind of kid. Watching television and reading, instead.

2. My kids have TVs, but I would definitely classify them as a "want" |
|
and not a "need."
(The kids' TVs are not hooked up to any antenna - they are for viewing videos)

6. Exactly. Unless your kid is bedridden, there's really no *need*. |
|
(And even if your kid is bedridden, *need* is relative.)
And the thing is, reasons are not needed from Milwaukee's Freecycle list. All you need to do is say: "Wanted: Two functional small TVs, any make or age. Will pick up within 10 miles of downtown," and people will answer or not. But if I had a TV to give, I would think twice before giving it to someone who says her kids need TVs.

10. I agree. Her ad seems a little manipulative. |

"Let's see who I can guilt into giving me the TVs we neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed. It's for CHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILDREN!"
