Philly Duers: Which cheesesteak is better? Geno's and Pat's? |
|
Okay you DUers in Philly. Which place has the best cheesesteaks? Geno's or Pat's. I was reading up on the topic last night and there seems to be this huge rivalry between who has the best ch-steaks in town. I also noticed that the guy who owns Geno's seems to lean a bit on the Freeper side of politics. Calling his fries "Freedom Fries" instead of "French fries" and insisting that his customers order in English. Sounds like a Freeper dude to me. However getting back the cheesesteaks, which one is better? You can even mention another establishment that beats both places too. Also, if there is a vegetarian alternative to the sandwich, what would it be?

3. my preference is Tony Luke's |

but I don't get to the city that much. Geno's and Pat's are the most well known, but not the best.
Used to be a place called Pudge's in the suburbs where I live that had, bar none, the best steak sandwich ever. Unfortunately Pudge died a few years ago and it's not like it used to be.

8. PUDGES!!! Loved that place |

sad to hear he died. They made the best hoagies anywhere.
Where did you live? I lived in Blue Bell until the early 90s. My family is still back there.

Pudges is about a 15 minute ride.
His nephew has a shop around the corner from me, but never had the same flair as the original.

4. I have seen both of those places on Food Network. |
|
But I've never been to Philadelphia.
For a vegetarian version - I guess just the cheese, onions and peppers?

6. I've stood in line for those places at 3am on a very cold January morning |

wearing a skimpy black cocktail dress, 4-inch stilettos, sheer black hose, wool coat and a massive buzz from a night of drinking at some pretentious Philly night club

12. That was my outfit when I ate Schmitters at McNally's |
|
I thought they were wonderful - cheesesteak meat plus thousand Island dressing on a kaiser roll (now sold at CB Park). A few years later I had them when I was sober - not quite so impressive.
I actually eat most of my cheesesteaks from those little silver carts that set up outside the office buildings in Center City. Every 3-4 months I get a SEVERE craving!

5. If I had to choose between just those two - I'd say Pats |
|
Mind you I've never had a Pat's steak, I was a confirmed Geno person until I saw that the owner was a freeper nut job with his freedom fries and 'English Only' sign.
However, if I want a really good cheese steak - Jim's on South & 4th without a doubt!

9. Jim's on South Street... |
|
Pat's and Gino's are both good (and have been on numerous late night cheesesteak runs in college to confirm this) but I think when you get right down to it Jim's has them beat. Plus the staff isn't nearly as rude

11. Well if I were to go to Philly it would be not at Geno's. |
|
According to the article, Pat's has a different attitude countering Geno's righty leanings. The guy clearly is a Bush Neocon supporter so I would probably give my business to Pat's on principle.
