8. The Beltline Bar (wet burritos) and others
The Beltline Bar is on the corner of South Division and 28th Street.

Yesterdog is a cheap and yummy coney island on Lake Drive in Eastown. They are open late on Saturdays, but are closed on Sundays.

Down the street a couple of miles on Lake Drive is a breakfast place called the Cherie Inn-they have the best Eggs Benedict on earth.

Pietros is good, the Adobe (if it's still there) has good mexican food.

The local chain of Arnies restaurants and bakeries are excellent. If you go to one, get a loaf of banket from the bakery before you leave-it's the local specialty, a loaf of phyllo-like dough with a creamy almond center. Or a piece of Black Forest torte. Mmm.

11. Burritos made with colby cheese: yes!

I actually do like them, but for a long time the Beltline Bar was my inauthentic impression of what Mexican food was.

Now when El Sombrero opened, people were like wow this is authentic.

9. Olive Garden!
Two of 'em, in fact:

And, no one has (as yet) been sickened by eating at either Grand Rapids Olive Garden! :bounce:

10. RUSS' BEATS ALL.
Edited on Fri Dec-15-06 03:37 PM by LoZoccolo
Be sure to go to one of the ones where you order from your table with a phone:

http://www.russrestaurants.com

Tell any Grand Rapidian that you went to Russ' when you visited, and you will be told that you experienced Grand Rapids.

There is also Mr. Burger:

http://umbralatro.tripod.com/id15.html

But Russ' is more Grand Rapids.

There used to be this really good chain of fast food restaurants named Mr. Fables but they shut down. They'd make burgers with chopped up olives and pimentos as well as lettuce and tomato that were a Grand Rapids staple.

There seems to be an unusual number of local chains and other businesses in the area, and I have a theory as to why that is, but I'm not sure I can say it on DU.

13. I forgot about Russ-the dutch Big Boy!
A complete fried chicken dinner for $5. And it's good, far better than Big Boy's food.

I miss Mr. Fables, though.

12. I live in Kentwood - My picks
Stockbridge Pub or Beltline Bar for burritos

BD's Mongolian BBQ stir-fry - BD's is a pretty active place, so if you're looking for some quiet time, I wouldn't suggest it.

Brann's and Mountain Jacks are good steakhouses.

16. Hello, ih8thegop!
I grew up in Kentwood, but I've lived in Boston for 16 years now. Noonwitch (above poster) and I went to high school together, and we reconnected on this board. I'll be home for the holidays beginning next Wednesday for about 9 days or so.

I remember the Beltline Bar well, and fondly, but I had forgotten about Russ' and Mr. Fable. My favorite hangout from my college days was the Cottage Bar, just off Fulton near the Veterans' Park. I'm pretty sure it's still there.
