I have empirical evidence that the gifted identification program in my county is hooey.

Case #1: TeenMidlo. Identified in 4th grade. Honors/AP student. Assumes ownership of the car we got her yesterday, a 2004 Camry. Takes BabyMidlo down the street, (literally) to get a haircut. I get a hysterical phone call that goes like this.

TM: Mom? Mom. Both of my blinkers are blinking and I don't know how to turn it off.

Me: Okay. You must have hit the hazard button. Press the bright red triangle on the dash and they should go off.

TM: What? What? Didn't you hear me? I can't turn them off.

Me: *sigh* I'll be right there.


Case #2: BabyMidlo. Identified in 2nd grade. Received the highest score ever in the history of the school. A Student. Playing in the backyard yesterday with PuppyMidlo when a bird hits a window and dies and lands on the patio. Said Puppy grabs dead bird and runs around yard with it. BabyMidlo and BoyMidlo get said bird away, dispose of it. BabyMidlo proceeds to the bathroom to bathe PuppyMidlo.

BM: *crying* Mommy. Mommy. I'm so worried about the puppy.

Me: Why?

BM: I think she's got the Bird flu.


And, once again, people wonder why I drink.
