Kids With High IQs Grow Up to Be Vegetarians

By Steven Reinberg
HealthDay Reporter Fri Dec 15, 2:01 PM ET

FRIDAY, Dec. 15 (HealthDay News) -- As a child's IQ rises, his taste for meat in adulthood declines, a new study suggests.

British researchers have found that children's IQ predicts their likelihood of becoming vegetarians as young adults -- lowering their risk for cardiovascular disease in the process. The finding could explain the link between smarts and better health, the investigators say.

28. Oh good
:D

Today is ekadasi, so I have been trying to be austere. This means eating a restricted diet, but recently it has been giving me a nasty headache. At least this time it fell on a weekend, so I have been sleeping a lot. Too much, in fact. So much for austerity...

How are you today? I see everyone liked your picture as much as I did. You look very sexy. :loveya:

I'm sorry you have that headache again. At least you can rest and don't have to work today. Eat some more bananas. :)

I'm doing ok. Gearing up for having people over. I don't do people so well. In the past, I'd have a little nip to relax me. I guess I'll just have to make due with being myself. *sigh*

Yes, I guess they liked the picture. I had to run it past you before anyone else though to get the official billyskank seal of approval. :loveya:

8. Bullshit
Mine is above 140, and I love meat. I seriously doubt that the majority of those 140, 150, or up are primarily vegetarian.

At least I was smart enough to avoid Odwalla's organic fruit juice when it caused an e. coli outbreak. And I don't eat bagged spinach either. Or lettuce from Taco Bell. Being a vegetarian sounds damn dangerous these past few years.

I knew a lot of vegetarians when I lived in Seattle - mostly from work. They were no brighter or dumber than anyone else. But they were a rather ignorant lot, come to think of it. Certainly, the smartest people I have known all my life love a good bloody steak.

24. It seems we have a glut of Vegans
here in the NW. I don't know what it is.

However, I have always contended that most of the vegans I know are unhealthy in some other way (physical or mental) that drives them toward it. Anyone else I know who has tried it and does not suffer from some ailment that compels them toward it give it up within three months.

The body needs meat!

9. Meh.
Ever notice how there's a study every day proving something different?
Ya know, if you drink 200 glasses of red wine a day, you'd get enough reservitol to
keep you from a heart attack? Too bad your liver would fail, or maybe your pancreas.

Next week they'll prove that high IQ's are connected with more baths as a child. Or perhaps
colder climates.

Whatever.

12. The problem is that scientists only study one variable...
They may be right in saying that eggs are high in cholesterol, but they are also high in protein.

One science study can only study whether they are high in protein or high in cholesterol, not both.

That's why these health reports on the news are useless unless a doctor consults and weighs the risks/benefits of eating eggs or some other food.

The simple and best advice is just to eat everything we Americans eat in moderation.

21. 164 IQ
I was tested at the age of 10. I'm probably a couple points lower now, but not much.

Oh, and, I LOVE meat. In fact I am a militant anti-vegetarian.

I'm not saying I don't keep myself conscious of the threat of cardiovascular disease, but I am more a fan of moderation than abstinence.

37. I'm not saying this study is right. I really don't know enough about it
But saying you have a high IQ does nothing to disprove it. The study didn't say everyone with a high IQ is a vegetarian or even that the majority are.

"Children who scored higher on IQ tests at age 10 were more likely than those who got lower scores to report that they were vegetarian at the age of 30," Gale said.

They're just saying there is a a higher rate than normal of vegetarianism among people who have higher IQs. Maybe it was 8 percent instead of 5 percent, they didn't give much for specifics in the article.

52. No where does it say ALL kids with high IQ's grow up to be vegetarians!
It sounds like one of those bullshit studies where they do a statistical analysis and find significant correlation. The limited sample they used and the questions they asked showed a statistical correlation that's all. It does not even address the methods used to measure IQ.

You can point to flawed methods, but no where does this study make your original point that ALL carnivores have low IQ's nor does it say ALL kids with high IQ's grow up to be vegetarians. If you had said " Kids with High IQ's MAY Grow Up to be Vegetarians." then you would have more accurately stated the conclusion of this bullshit study.

53. of course it is BS
because as you have said "IQ" itself is crap. We test for IQs and the test themselves are only as good as those who developed them. No test is a true measure of intelligence. Whether it is an IQ test or a history test. There are persons who test well and some who don't.
The standard IQ is limited in what it tests.

BTW, Einstein was intelligent but he lacked understanding/intelligence in many areas.

The same holds true for Tesla, whom I consider the genius of our time, he definitely lacked basic everyday common sense 'intelligence'.

43. Most such studies are bogus, fluffy pseudoscience,
even when conducted by qualified, reputable people. For one, anything that involves the concept of 'IQ' is suspect, IQ itself being a suspect measure of whatever the hell intelligence is (or, rather, what form of intelligence is apparent -- or not -- at any given time).

High IQ may be generally correlated with vegetarianism in Western societies (the UK, at least) but that does not mean that vegetarianism, in turn, predicts high IQ.
