1. TIME's Wicked Pizah of the Year
If it was any lamer, they'd have to shoot it and feed it to the cows.

3. Why? It's a great idea.
And true. People on the internet had a significant impact this year on world events.

5. And your examples of that??
Edited on Sat Dec-16-06 09:42 PM by bigwillq
I can see the grassroots campaign but from one article I just read, that was just posted on-line said nothing about that.

They mention youtube and MySpace but not grassroots.

To me, youtube and MySpace do not deserve any kind of recognition.

Sure, they're fun sites but what impact to they really have in the grand scheme of things??

NEW YORK (Reuters) - You were named Time magazine "Person of the Year" on Saturday for the explosive growth and influence of user-generated Internet content such as blogs, video-file sharing site YouTube and social network MySpace.

"For seizing the reins of the global media, for founding and framing the new digital democracy, for working for nothing and beating the pros at their own game, Time's Person of the Year for 2006 is you," the magazine's Lev Grossman wrote.

The magazine has put a mirror on the cover of its "Person of the Year" issue, released on Monday, "because it literally reflects the idea that you, not us, are transforming the information age," Editor Richard Stengel said in a statement.

11. Most of the MSM considers DU a "blog."
Did you know that the big newspaper corps are facing tremendous decisions about their futures? Why? Because people use the internet as a source for news more than they use any other medium.

Time mentions blogs, too. And these "blogs" have been my source of news more than any other for the past five or six years.

16. In the blogs' case....
I agree with it but this myspace and youtube bullshit is just that....shit....what are those sites really contributing to society?

I work for a newspaper and I am well aware of the impact the internets are having and I am none to happy about it.

7. Absolutely. We were the groundswell of opposition to the war in Iraq.
Others caught on late in the game.

WE saw which way the wind blew long before the MSM and John Q. did.

20. Right after I make my tearful hour long acceptance speech
while I nervously rustle paper trying desperately to open it and having tons of trouble doing so because I folded it so many times. The audience will laugh at me while I make faces, so you'll have a tough act to follow. :P

6. I don't think that it's a cop out. I think it's pretty accurate.
As much as I disliked Howard Dean during the primary wars here at DU in 2003 and 2004, I've got to give him and others credit for initiating the computer-powered-collective revolution that ushered in changes this past year.

I think Time's opinion is correct.

9. Yeah but in one story I just read
all they talk about is myspace and youtube.....

I don't think we the people should get any kind of recognition for giving birth to those sites.

Sure they're fun and all but.....

23. I think the whole hour run-up to the announcement was a huge
waste of time and energy. I could have had a nap.

I liked the idea of Bush, Rumsfeld and Cheney as a triple "Axis of ?Whatever?" that someone suggested when they were having their meetings. Can you imagine the mess Dubya would have made fo himself?
