1. Poor, grieving Mr. Gower always breaks my heart.
And the last few years, I've wondered how many families are going through the same thing.

2. Great film - but why is it considered a "Christmas movie?"
They always show it around this time of year, and usually something gets written calling it "one of the best-loved Christmas movies" bla bla bla. Yes, the last 30 minutes or so of it do take place on Christmas Eve. But 80% of the film has nothing to do with Christmas. I just don't get it. I like the film very much, I just can't see calling it a "Christmas movie."

3. It's not just the last 30 minutes.
Christmas Eve (in Bedford Falls) frames the movie. The majority of it may be taken up by flashbacks, but it's set on Christmas Eve.

4. Capra used a lot of symbolism in his movies..
and he uses Christmas in this one to make it more dramatic an heartrendering. Meet John Doe and Mr. Deeds Goes To Town are two other of my favorite movies by Capra. During the Depression he gave a message of hope and the idea that honesty and character always prevail over evil. That still comes through.
