That's not an awful lot of pressure drop.

17. A dangerous condition in high altitudes -- particularly above 8,000 feet -- is
Acute Mountain Sickness .

The good news is that the body generally can adapt to the decreased oxygen at higher elevations in a matter of a few days.

22. The closer you live to sea level, the more time your body will need to get used to high altitude.
Avoid strenuous activity for the first day or two.
Drink extra fluids, at least 6 to 8 glasses of water or juice a day.
Not drink alcohol or take sleeping pills, tranquilizers or antihistamines.
Eat high-carbohydrate foods (rice, pasta, cereal).

Now, go enjoy the beautiful mountains !

Rocky Mountain Hiiiiiiigh.

I spent a summer in Colorado and I never felt anything other than breathless when I tried to go for a hike there.

Being a mountain person is just not in me, I think. Give me the coast, any day ...

18. Just wondered, I' ve been there. Estes Park is Beautiful.
There is a point on Trail Ridge Rd. where you are above 12,000 ft +/- and its a two lane road, no shoulder to speak of and no guard rail (at least not when I was there last) and you are literally at the apex of 1 mountain. If anyone should go off road at point,.....On either side,...well, gravity would take over for a LONG time. My wife was totally freaked when an RV was comming toward us.

I love that drive, it is a beautiful view, and so much to see.

I actually saw a female moose on the East (Estes) side of Rocky Mtn. Park. I know that usually you are lucky to see one on the other side, but I was impressed to see her walking in the road last year.

I moved from south Florida to Colorado last year. I was so sick when I first got there. I live at 8500 feet now and am doing fine -- finally adjusted to the altitude, even though I have asthma. I agree with those who said drink lots of water and don't try to overdo it. Take it easy for the first couple of days and you should be fine.

You just got here in time for some snow, too! Lucky you! :)

I'm glad you posted that Rev's computer died. I would have worried about that girl, but now I know that she is just fine on the highway to hell with Toby!

69. Are you sure it isn't the leg pic thread that has you feeling dizzy?

75. Try being anemic & traveling to altitude!
Live at sea level, and took a vacation to the Medicine Bow Range in WY -- 7500 feet. Wasn't thinking that maybe a high-altitude vacation wasn't a good idea if I was scheduled for surgery to help my severe anemia. Got fatigued really easily, and always short of breath (that never happened before).

Thankfully, it was a horseback riding vacation, so my horse did most of the work. Spent the rest of the time in a hammock, which doesn't suck either. And got totally blotto on 2 tiny glasses of wine (altitude saves you mucho dinero on alcohol)

One positive thing: when we got back to sea level, it was like I was on meth for a day: Never felt so much energy in my LIFE (yay! Oxygen!). So you've go that to look forward to!
