archived? Is it based on time? The number of days that a post has been accessible? Whether or not there have been comments in the last 24 hours? At the sole discretion of the moderators?

What have you observed? Any printed rules on this?

This has to do with my movie reviews, so I'm asking the question in general. I will contact the administrators if I want to, so please do not tell me to do that. Thanks.

I post reviews of movies on the day they open. For example, "Happy Feet" opened on Friday, November 17. Some discussion ensued, but not a lot. So now the thread is archived and no one can post comments anymore.

At first, I thought this was a good decision. But it isn't, in my opinion. Some of the movies that are still in first-run theaters are now archived. "Happy Feet" is still drawing crowds. This truncates the ability of people who are just seeing a film and wish to post their opinions as comments.

I haven't checked the other recent movies in my journal. I don't think that other web sites such as LiveJournal.com have any such control on comments.

I understand the DU wants "fresh material" all the time or it would be boring. Talk to me. Tell me more.

On edit: It looks as if the only thread that is NOT archived is the top one in my journal. Is that true?

Thanks for your time.

1. It's strictly a matter of time (how fast a thread falls to the back).
Locked threads, obviously, slide backwards a little faster, but it's purely a timing/activity thing.

2. When it falls to the bottom of page 20.

It goes to the archive.

--edit-- On average it takes about seven days to hit the Lounge archive.. I was really bored one night.

3. I'm thinking it's based on the time of the last reply
but that's just a guess.

We've missed you at the Meet-ups btw! :)

4. Hi again Viva. Sorry we can't make them. It's not a snub -- we did
try for Goose Hollow. Also, I can't take the smoking atmosphere.

Thanks for the invites -- maybe back outside in the summer?

11. I understand. I'm a "smoke magnet" with bitter memories of

the smell of smoking around the swimming pool even with the wind blowing -- the smoke just lays there right on the surface of the water, around my nose.

The good news is: I don't find the smell of marijuana objectional at all!!! My kids used it upstairs in our house when they were teenagers. I found that out years later, found all the bongs they left when they moved out. ("Honey, what's this cute little pipe for?")

I once asked my stepdaughter whether she used cocaine. She said, "Of course not. It's too expensive."

5. Like Omphaloskepsis said, it's archived once it falls off the 20th page.

If it gets kicked before falling off page 20, it'll stay active until it eventually falls off page 20.

6. So, the post has to be challenging enough to keep it on top all the time?
I guess movie reviews won't do that, unless there's some controversy, like with "Apocalypto" -- also, I don't have the time to keep kicking them artificially.

I know that comments are allowed at RottenTomatoes.com (a movie site) but I don't know for how long.

At the Internet Movie Database, you can post comments for eternity, even on older movies.

I guess I'll have to work within those guidelines. Thanks a bunch, night people. (Or daytime if you're in Europe, whatever...)

7. It all depends on the software the website uses and the format of the site.
Edited on Sun Dec-17-06 01:31 AM by primate1
And the preference of the website's administrators. DU uses a significantly different format and software than IMDb and Rottentomatoes.

10. You could always use something like...
http://www.vox.com/

And then put your URI in your signature line here. I'm not sure if they still require a invite to join. If they do, just say the word. I should have a few.

12. Naw, thanks anyway. I don't have the time or energy to work with yet another website.
