Someone who has inspired you, helped you learn something new, did something wonderful, etc and so on.

We should leave out Skinner and the Mods I suppose for fairness.

So if you could name one DU'er who made the biggest impression this year on you, who would it be and why?

(Since I started this I will Abstain, especially since one DU'er recently came to my aid and I am a bit biased by recent events).

We have a lot of great folks here, give em some recognition here!

2004: "The Kerry-Supporter."
2003: "The Anti-War DUer."
2002: "The Midterm-Election Activist."
2001: "Skinner."

2. I agree
I can't think of how many times someone has posted an article and twenty people fleshed the subject out with their own knowledge of the situation. If I had only read the article and not known all the particulars behind what was written I would have been mislead many times. It is a community effort and all are equally important in my opinion.

6. I think it should be the "Anonymous DUer"
Edited on Sun Dec-17-06 12:58 AM by TahitiNut
... the one (or more) who gives out stars and does other things without ever letting themselves be known. When I think about who could do that and that it could be the biggest PITA or the nicest poster, I'm made aware of how totally ignorant I am of WHO that person really is behind that every post. When I think I have a handle on someone, I remind myself that I don't know shit about the shoes they walk in - and it could easily be the person I'm thinking of flaming that did something nice and generous for someone else without ever trying to get credit.

I remember Valentine's Day on DU. I think it was the best week DU had in 6 years!

It was the best week ever for fundraising...

But more than that.......there was so much love, especially in the Lounge, that I could hardly believe it.......

And to try to chose which had the most influence or impressed me most would be imposable because they are too numerous to deal with.
DU has been such a incredible resource for me over the years.
And it may well be that the best is the one that I missed.

I had a heart from an anonymous donor and it meant to much to me because at that time I was below 1000 posts and seem to always be catching flack. I was really down in the dumps at that particular time and that anonymous donor giving me that heart meant so much to me then and they still do. :-)

Does one take the easy way out by selecting all over one or a few? Or is it really prudent, at some point, to say all?

26. Yeah, like we don't have enough unofficial popularity contests around here.
Plus, it's bad enough to get my nose rubbed in the dirt once a year with the Valentine's Day "hearts" campaign -- which will inspire me to take a break for the duration if it comes back next year.

Some of us don't relish the idea of yet another reminder that we're not the cool kids.

33. since I began posting @DU, many names, including some on this OP, come to mind...
As I think back over the past year a virtual universe of DU stars illuminate my memory. No matter how bright distant stars truly shine, from Earthly perspective, nearby candles appear brighter. Whether online or in person, the closer we are to those who light and warm our lives, the brighter they appear. Considering the numerous Alpha Stars of DU, leads to important questions: What would they be without any recommendations? Who would they be without comments to keep brilliant OPs alive? How would they survive without true blue friends to warm their lives?

Nominating brilliant DU stars or closer flames that warm life might cause us too lose focus on what is truly important, so please consider this final question:

Which shines the brightest;

a candle or the mirror that reflects its brilliance?
