2. I'd be forced to get a gun to protect myself. |
|
Then they'd probably leave me.
The cat, however, could stay (as long as I got to keep my gun).

the right answer was added to the poll after I voted. Lesson: Wait at least an hour before casting a vote.

I cruise the latest page.. sometimes Greatest . and a secret forum which wishes to remain anonymous.
But you have a style, don't you? Who would sit around and figure out that you can really mess with people's heads if you change the poll questions on DU. And make it about a cat?
Pure genius.
edit: but it sounds like the others? Messin with the head? How does that progress us? Or does it matter.

|
guess I still have to learn that these things then take off an have a life of their own. Being silly was changing the poll questions, though they stayed changed for less than a minute. How does this progress us? Sometimes things don't.

I'm extremely allergic. The very presence of a cat sets me off the instant I enter a house, the cat doesn't need to be anywhere near me. Some people like them, even worship them, but I'd be perfectly happy if every cat in the world disappeared.

you would know that there is no such thing as a true allergy to cats. It's myth. You might have a reaction to a bad skin condition that an unkempt cat has. But you are not really allergic to the 'cat'. If they have a healthy diet and keep good grooming, cats are not an allergen, as a species in toto. Think about it. You cannot be 'allergic' to an entire species.
Like, I'm allergic to dolphins. See how that sounds? People with 'cat' allergies are sometimes a bit clueless.
I once thought I had one cat I was "allergic" to. Couldn't understand why when he came and rubbed on my chin, I got all itchy. Talked it over with someone and came the the conclusion, that "Scotty" liked to sleep in the attic. He picked up synthetic fibers and brought them down and rubbed them on me. I wasn't allergic to Scotty! It was the insulation.
I have some native plants in my yard. They put out glorious flowers, and I have no idea what they are or where they came from. I do know that if I go trying to cut them or deal with them in any way, I get itchy all over. Maybe it's a protective mechanism.
I'm sick right now because people say that I moved to the "allergy capital of the world". Guess what. I have an immune system. It might be flaring up now, but later, it will be able to deal with all the bs that this new environment is throwing at me. You have an immune system. It's working for you. It wants you to survive. Your job is to allow that.

18. Not quite right, sometimes people are allergic to cat saliva also, and regarding "species" |
|
Edited on Sun Dec-17-06 04:45 PM by uppityperson
Usually people are allergic to what a cat has on its fur, whether it is something they picked up in their roamings or just dried saliva from cleaning themselves. Also, having 1 cat in your life is about the same as having allergy shots, give you about the same exposure (got this from my allergist dr) so keeping 1 cat around means you can avoid the shots. And there is a way to decrease dried cat saliva on their fur by washing regularly which works with some cats but not with others.
However, you can be allergic to a whole species, such as shellfish, or a species of antibiotics, or strawberries whether they are grown in California or Ecuador.

29. I can almost see your point. |
|
When I was a kid, one of the cousins had asthma. So they got him a dog.
I'm a student of microbiology and the human immune system. The only way people get 'sick' is when there is a breakdown in the system that was put in charge of keeping them well. I used to work for a huge corp who, when I was young and foolish, believed, they were looking for a 'cure' for cancer. I came up with a few theories. But traditional cancer treatment, and alas, conventenial 'allergy' cures, are just what you mention, but that's not what they do! They take the road to further comrpromise the immune system.
The saliva you mention is controlled by DIET. Some indeed do need a raw diet. Mine gets little wheezing attacks sometimes. Sneezing. He is building up his immunity too. He was raised in an almost sterile environment. Think about the guy in the bubble. And how many people die in a hospital. Sterile has it's limits.
Yes, he will have things that challenge his immune system. That is how immunity is built. I may be off the charts here. But I'm so convinced of this.
See, I am sometimes in the position that I need to find a roommate. If you check out craigslist, you will find that many times the caveat is . sorry no cats sooo allergic. I want to say, you haven't met my cat, so an allergy has not been established. This was one thing I went through with the ex-rm. He was so terrified that he would have allergies. Because it happened once. He has two fine kitties and no sign of allergies. In fact, I think they heal him. I didn't even have a cat earlier, but don't want a no-cat roommate. How does that help?
I used to hate cats. Never saw any good in them. But I had an high school english teacher who talked about her cat ad infitium. Stepping through the glasses. All kinds of kitty scapades she talked about. I was longing to get down to the topic... english? Hello? Did the teacher show up? Or does it just look like Ms. L? But she was instrumental in allowing me to give cats a chance. She offered a challenge. Said the only reason someone would not love a kitty would be due to insecurity. I didn't like them. I offered some excuses. But she nailed it. I was scared. Now I'm not. They don't threaten me.
That's my kitty story and I'm stickin to it.

|
I almost instantly become unimaginably stopped ip in the sinuses and start breaking out in HUGE ITCHY HIVES AND BLISTERS, even when I'm not aware that there is a cat is all in my mind, I guess. With all due respect, Votes, I can well and truly say that I am ALLERGIC to the proteins in the cat saliva they all use to groom themselves, consequently, ' allergic to CATS.
Himself almost died from an acute allergic reaction to cats as a young teen.
By the way, do you live in the Sacramento Valley? Sacramento has long been known as the allegy capitol of the world. My mom worked for an ENT whose clientele were primarily there due to their allergies and complications due to them.

For a couple reasons: 1. I am seriously allergic to cats 2. My spouse knows this 3. My spouse hates cats
These three thing together mean, to me, that if she got a cat it would solely be to spite me.

14. "Dogs have masters, cats have staff." Sign at cat clinic. |
|
Had to take one our two "masters" (or, in this case, "mistresses) in because of illness.
Though I love dogs, despite being an ex-postman, I (and my wife) prefer cats because of their independence and endless manipulations to have us cater to their every desire.
You have to accept them on their terms or get the kitty equivalent of the finger.

I adopted in a couple for my former roommate. They now possess a piece of property in north Texas on a Lake! where they are quite content. His term for himself is "kitty valet". A staff of one .. most of the time. But anyone else they can enlist at any time, they are willing.
They are really quite adaptable. I just took mine's training wheels away this week (the 'box'). I have never had a cat who got to use the box. There is great outdoors. Haven't had any issues. He's cool with it. Just gotta let them sleep, most of the time. And open the door. Food and water. Very easy.
I was inudated with dog people. And have just decided that, I can't take that on. If someone else wants to have a dog, then let them spend endless hours throwing things that the dog wants to 'go get'. Not my job, didn't sign up. Because I own one lone kitty. Who has me fetch. Much better this way, doncha think? I'm a staff person. Not a thrower of things. Big difference.

16. My mom's landed in the Hospital 3 times from cat bites. |
|
They have an organism in their mouths that can cause bad infections. I had a lot of swelling from a bite once myself and had to get an antibiotic injection, but she must be very sensitive to it. She had to have intravenous medication for several days.

I was late for work once because I found a pigeon with a broken wing almost frozen to death on the side walk.
Try explaining to your animal hating boss that you HAD to pick it up, walk back home and set him up comfortably in a cage until you found someone to take care of him.
I had to stop, I couldn't just keep walking and leave him to die.
That's also how I ended up raising a baby possum.
