1. I wonder how many people fall for it.
My guess would be quite a few.

2. there are stories here and there about the ones
who fall for these scam artists. The thing is, it is a no brainer for the scammers. All they do is send out a few million emails and wait for the suckers to come calling. As scams go, it is all profit.

5. This one's bizarre.
It doesen't ask you to deposit money in some account in order to recieve the prize.

6. Actually this is a fairly typical opening
for one of these scams. They don't ask for money right away; that would be a bit too obvious. What they do is to build up a relationship with an exchange of maybe 4 or 5 emails before miscellaneous fees start cropping up that need to be paid to facilitate the transfer-- attorneys, barristers, "drug-free" certificate fees, travel expenses and so on.

7. Oh I see.
I remember I saw one back in the day that asked for money for some fees right away. Even heard about someone who was working in the same place as me that fell for it. That was pretty pathetic.

I replied telling them to call me immediately and gave the number of some phone sex site. The emails stopped soon after that.

9. What a weird letter
I like this line - "Since his death I decided not to re-marry and presently I am 67 Years old." Well, if he died in the Indonesian tsunami, that was what? Two years ago? Why would it be unusual not to remarry after only two years (especially after being married for 20?) She makes it sound as if guys were knocking down her door or something but she nobly decided to let 'em down easy.

I love these things and I'm always amazed and saddened that so many people fall for them (they must or they wouldn't still be making the rounds).
