4. "Deacon Blues" was my first favorite 'Dan song.
It was the first song I consciously knew to be the 'Dan, even before "Reelin'" or "Do it Again."

14. Love That Song
but this is better:

DEACON BLUES

This is the day
Of the expanding man
That shape is my shade
There where I used to stand
It seems like only yesterday
I gazed through the glass
At ramblers
Wild gamblers
That's all in the past

You call me a fool
You say it's a crazy scheme
This one's for real
I already bought the dream
So useless to ask me why
Throw a kiss and say goodbye
I'll make it this time
I'm ready to cross that fine line

CHORUS:
I'll learn to work the saxophone
I'll play just what I feel
Drink Scotch whisky all night long
And die behind the wheel
They got a name for the winners in the world
I want a name when I lose
They call Alabama the Crimson Tide
Call me Deacon Blues

My back to the wall
A victim of laughing chance
This is for me
The essence of true romance
Sharing the things we know and love
With those of my kind
Libations
Sensations
That stagger the mind

I crawl like a viper
Through these suburban streets
Make love to these women
Languid and bittersweet
I'll rise when the sun goes down
Cover every game in town
A world of my own
I'll make it my home sweet home

CHORUS

This is the night
Of the expanding the man
I take one last drag
As I approach the stand
I cried when I wrote this song
Sue me if I play too long
This brother is free
I'll be what I want to be

18. I've never seen you lookin' so bad, my funky one.
You tell me your super fine mind has come undone.

Any major dude with half a heart surely will tell you, my friend.
Any minor world that breaks apart falls together again.
When the demon is at your door
In the morning it won't be there no more.
Any major dude will tell you.

Have you ever seen a squonk's tears? Well, look at mine.
The people on the street have all seen better times.

Any major dude with half a heart surely will tell you, my friend.
Any minor world that breaks apart falls together again.
When the demon is at your door,
In the morning it won't be there no more.
Any major dude will tell you.

I can tell you all I know, the where to go, the what to do
You cant ry to run but you can't hide from what's inside of you.

Any major dude with half a heart surely will tell you, my friend.
Any minor world that breaks apart falls together again.
When the demon is at your door,
In the morning it won't be there no more.
Any major dude will tell you.

That was before mid-century retro was being used much in pop culture. I recently saw it again on youtube and it holds up so well.

27. Dirty Work
The rest were radio played-out way back when. Give them more time before I can enjoy them again. With some groups, it happens. Too much radio play (back when I listened to radio), followed by some fallow years to refresh the sound.

There's actually an article in today's paper about that song and the fact that Wake Forest now has a winning football team. Becker and Fagen didn't respond to interview requests to confirm it was written about Wake's football team.

At least, everything I've ever read says that it's not about Wake Forest at all--it is about a jazzman, and is mildly autobiographical.
