7. Safe? yes
Expensive? yes

Does it work? yes (take it with a light carb snack, and don't have protein at least 3 hrs before ingestion. On an empty stomach it can be nauseating)

Back in the 80's, one of the companies tried to bioengineer the product (it was still a supplement), and that's when people got sick. Now, it's regulated (and produced by pharmaceutical companies. I don't know if that is still concerning).

8. It's an amino acid
that was known to increase serotonin. However, it was improperly manufactured in the 1980s or so and the batch caused some rare and serious condition. The FDA took it off the market but it is back on the market now. It's quite pricey. You might want to try 5-HTP, another OTC supplement for similar benefits.

9. I used Tryptophan back in the 80's before it was banned
Now I use Melatonin as a sleep aid. I like Melatonin better. I didn't have much luck with Tryptophan.

Here is the Wikipedia entry about Melatonin: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melatonin You can read all about there.

10. Except that melatonin is manufactured from cow brains.
During back in the days when people worried about "mad cow disease," this was a very serious concern.

The sleep drug Ambien is a melatonin analogue.
