Poll question: A personal poll: What % of DUers are totally out of touch with reality? |
|
This is only a personal opinion poll and should not be taken as proof of anything...

|
Like any large organization there appears a group of disruptors. So a cross section of DU does not see reality well.

Perhaps some of the unlearned will become enlightened when far less crappy legislation get through in the near future. There's always hope, aleays hope...

13. I've been too busy lately, but.. |
|
I plan on writing a lengthy post in the near future about how a bill REALLY becomes a law. And I don't mean the simplified, completely incorrect textbook version most people know. I mean, from inception, to the REAL role of lobbyists, to procedural votes, and so forth.
As a lobbyist, I find it unceasingly sad that the vast majority of Americans, even those whom are very educated, have no idea what role we play. They don't understand what we do or, worse, have a gross misconception that all we do is bribe for "special interests", which couldn't be further from the truth. Even worse, I don't think they understand the important role Congressional and Committee staffers play in getting things done. It's far greater than most realize, and what is and is not included in laws, in a lot of cases, can have everything to do with a staffer merely changing jobs or being on a honeymoon.
At any rate, it's something I've been meaning to get to for quite some time, but I haven't had much chance to even think lately, much less write something that long. Hopefully, I will be able to do so in the near future.

19. But that makes for being 'totally' out of touch with reality? |
|
Can't a person believe a few impossible things and still be at least a little bit in touch? I would not even say that people who believe that $100,000 a year income is NOT rich are TOTALLY out of touch with reality. Maybe a little bit, but not totally.

15. "Reach one, teach one" Excellent! Easier to teach if one doesn't start with put downs too. |
|
There is a fair bit of fuzzy logic and too many pair of rose colored glasses around here, but not everybody reaches enlightenment at the same rate. Give us time, indeed.
When the corporatists have spent so many resources hiding the truth, it takes a while to get the crowd to see what is out there.
And it is true that some people CAN'T handle the truth. They are not all freepers either. People have limits on what they can deal with. Some have very low pain tolerance and truth hurts.

6. no offense intended, but I think a lot of the posts that might lead one to believe . . . |
|
that the poster is "out of touch with reality" come from younger members who simply haven't had much life experience yet . . . and since understanding reality generally comes from life experience, their posts may sometimes seem a bit out of touch . . .
those of us who have been on the planet for awhile have just seen and experienced a lot more and, hopefully, have a firmer grasp on "things as they are" -- and a well developed conscience to imagine how things might be . . .
again, no offense to our younger members intended . . . just a personal observation . . .

until someone can demonstrate the value of DUers that volunteer their time during elections, collect news that msm seems to ignore in one convenient place, show their generosity to other DUers as well as charities (Katrina, Harvest), lend an ear to people who otherwise are isolated, turned one or more people's opinion favorably to the Democratic party, contact lawmakers to make their opinions known, interpret findings scientific, economic and otherwise that others find difficult, share info & blog sites. I'm sure I've left out much.
It depends on your interpretation of reality I guess.

middle class, which could be inaccurate.
Also being retired helps in having time for all this.
I'm sure everyone does the best they can, but their criteria should be their own.

8. All reality is local. (With apologies to Tip O'neil). |
|
Saying 'All is delusion' or 'The world is delusion' is by implication saying illusion/delusion IS, that is, that it exists, that it has it's own independent existence, existing independently without need. Dependent origination on the other hand, implies there can be absolutely nothing whatsoever that is real or eternal behind this actual world and beyond the interdependence of everything. Because of that interdependence all that exists is inherently empty. It can be argued on the conventional level there is causation that could or would back up illusion/delusion, but because causation has no inherent existence either, neither then could or would illusion/delusion. To perceive that causation DOES have inherent existence is what is called ignorance. Perceiving that LACK of causation in inherent existence is wisdom.
Almost everybody that reads a little about Zen starts thinking that NOTHING exists because everything is inherently empty, so what we perceive as reality must be delusion. But emptiness is the absence of independent existence. What that means is SOMETHING must exist and one of the qualifications of that existence is emptiness...the absence of independent existence is only possible because there is SOMETHING that exists...otherwise there would be no 'need' for the absence of independent existence, and if there was no absence of independent existence, then everything would not be empty.
Hope that clears it all up.
Note: Taken from a Zen website.
