I'm a'skeered
A few years back I had a perforated gastric ulcer. I was in the hospital for about 6 weeks. Now my doc says that I might have another ulcer. I have to go get a scope. A very good friend of mine just had that procedure and the doc perforated his esophagus. He's been in ICU for a while and just had surgery. He was in ghastly pain. Now I'm scared to death. Am I being paranoid? :scared:

1. I hope so.
I'd hate to think that this kind of worrying is entirely justified. :(

I hope the scope goes well, and I hope there are absolutely no complications or accidents.

2. maybe
but paranoia is under-rated; it's a survival instinct. :)

Best wishes, and be sure to go to a different doctor than the one who perforated your friend's esophagus. :scared:

:hi:

5. Oh, I intend to
Although, my friend's doc was in tears and feels awful about it. IMO he should pay the hospital bills.

6. Yes, he should,
as I'm sure your friend was also in tears and feels awful about it, being the victim and all.

8. His SO is taking such good care of him
We've been taking him dinner so he wouldn't have to leave.

3. I've Been Scoped Half A Dozen Times And They Only Perforated Mine Once!
well the doc thinks he did

I was in pain and spiked a temp and ....

It only happened because he was a lazy asshole (admitted this to me) who didn't want to wait for a key to unlock a dilator so he used a larger one than was needed and it at least tore the tissue pretty good, if it did perforate I think it had to have been very small. He's convinced he did.

No, I would never go see him again.

Scopes usually aren't the problem, it's dilitation. But nothing is without risk.

Bleeding ulcers are with risk. Go have the scope and forget what I said above.

:D :P :pals:

7. The dilation is what perforated his esophagus
That doc was a dick!!!! I'm glad you're not going to him again.
I'm going to the doc that did my colonoscopy. His nickname is
"magic hands". He also knows that it takes loads of meds to
put me down. I get violent when I'm going under, but he was
perfectly nice when I went for a followup.

Yes, there's always a risk, but I don't want to spend
another 2 months in the hospital with a perforated ulcer
either. To make matters worse, I'm taking a blood thinner.

9. I Wish You Well, Probably Shouldn't Have Told You That Story
the really ironic thing is that after he had told me what he did, (I work in a hospital) I walked by him talking to another doctor and said hi to him and he goes to the other doctor "I almost killed him" and laughed.

Yeah, get the scope done, it really isn't very dangerous. I take lots of meds too, mostly because I FIGHT THEM I hate to go under- MORE DEMEROL and versed.

11. I work in a hospital too
This doc will give me as much as I ask for (so long as it doesn't kill me). I get really violent - tearing off face masks, reaching for their throats, stuff like that. I'm told that's not uncommon.
If I'm alert, I completely freak out. The spray sucks too. It tastes like esters smell we made in organic chemistry.

I figure it's a rare occurrence. I just hate that it happened to my friend.

18. I Remember Holding Down Someone
while an idiot doctor did a scope in an exam room about 20 years ago. I don't know what he was doing in retrospect. I was in my early 20's and was a Psych Tech at the time and was just asked to come and help.

They fought and fought.

Here's to hoping yours turns out just fine, and all you've got is a little gastritis!

19. Thanks, but it's in the same spot as the last one
When I press on it, it hurts worse. I've had ulcers before
and that danged perforated ulcer. It's in the anterior RUQ and not
in the duodenum. I've requested the doc that did a couple of
colonoscopies on me and he's super. Thanks for the good wishes:
I need all the good vibes I can get. You:

10. Any procedure can be terrifying
I hope you'll be okay, ginbarn, and that your doctor's fears are unfounded.

I've had a couple of them, and never had any problems...

13. I hope you're right
I blame my boss. She's a total bully and thrives on anger.
I really don't expect any problems - I just don't want it
to get so far gone that I bleed out.

Thanks for the hugs and encouragement.

15. I hope you'll consider
that your health is much more important than your job. I've lost my health due to overwork before and it's something you don't want to experience.

Take care, ginbarn.

20. I'm the primary breadwinner in our family
so it's not that easy. My boss has been here 32 years
and when she retires, she'll be making 60K. That's way
more than I make working. I've got five years before
I reach the magic number of 80 (age + years working
here). I'm hoping she bails, but I'm told that she
doesn't want to be around her son that much. She's
such a charming woman. :sarcasm:

Thanks for the good thoughts - I desperately need them.

The icky spray in the throat is the worst part, I think.
Unless something goes wrong, but I don't expect that.

21. I've had one before
and I was out like a light. It was over before
I knew it.

I just got creeped when my good friend had his
"complicaton". They're not litigious people
(nor am I) but I sure wish they'd at least sue
for hospital charges and loss of income.

Thanks, Joan. You're a doll.

have such awful complications kind of freaked me out.
Thanks for the kind words.
