Fact is, we'll never know, because of the stupid college postseason set up. They should have playoffs for the top tier, making the bowl games the final rounds.

Otherwise it's pure speculation, and shows how subjective the ratings are.

(I have no dog in the hunt this year, my team was deemed the national champs 2 years ago, and just came off a bad year)
