Caroling etiquette
I haven't been caroling in years, but I seem to remember that people sometimes brought us drinks when we caroled. Is this a standard tradition?

I'm just curious, because last year some carolers came through my SF neighborhood for the first time, and I thought it was wonderful, but wondered whether I ought to be rewarding them in some way as they'd gone to all the trouble to sing such lovely music below my window.

So what's the deal? Do you "tip" a caroler? :D

1. Well when it was a recognized tradition...
typically groups out singing carols were treated to refreshments and/or donations to charity. When I was a child I remember giving carolers hot chocolate and doughnuts along with coins for local food banks. Eons since that has happened.

Unfortunately, I don't think most people know what to do with carolers anymore. This is one tradition I wish would come back in force. Music and giving. It doesn't get much better than that.

3. Should I applaud at least?
Since I'm on the second floor in the back of a building, giving them drinks might be difficult, but I feel I ought to do something. (That is, if they show again this year.) Funny thing is, there's a huge tree filling my window, so they probably won't be able to see me if I do clap. It would be like the tree was mysteriously applauding them. :)

4. Definitely!
You know what? The carolers couldn't care less about refreshments or donations. Knowing that someone enjoyed the performance would mean everything in the world. Seriously!

A bunch of us would go caroling around the neighborhood and collect donations for Children's Hospital in a bucket. Then we'd take the money to the hospital and sing for the kids.
