My apartment was broken into this afternoon.
They had to be watching me- I drove off and was back in ten minutes, and when I came back my front door was unlocked- they had come in through a bedroom window, picked up a 19" flat screen computer monitor and a laptop computer, and they simply walked out the front door. I'm still waiting for the fingerprint cops to show up- not much chance they'll find anything, but the laptop was a client's, so I need to go through the motions for the insurance.

Funny- I was just thinking about this stuff yesterday- how I've suddenly become an overweight, middle aged target for random mayhem and I should probably find a way to protect myself, and the very next day this happens.

Ain't life a bitch.

Life goes on. They didn't really get much, when if they'd have taken the time to rummage around they could have scored a bit more and REALLY pissed me off. I feel lucky, and plan to keep on living without being frightened. It'll take a hell of a lot more than a little smash and grab to put me off my feed.

Just one bit of advice- Check your back room windows! Don't let yourself be an easy target!

1. Mrs Matcom's car was broken into last night
they didn't take anything - probably looking for cash (which we NEVER keep in the cars).

called the police this morning (just to let them know) and they said someone hit HUNDREDS of cars last night.

tis the season :eyes:

2. Bummer. Sorry that happened to you. Maybe you should move to our street. We have
one State Trooper and two locoal cops living on the street, which is only about 1/3 mile long. So at any given time, there's at least one police cruiser parked on the street, where they can be seen from anywhere along the street.

We'll never need to install a burglar alarm. But you might want to consider one.

3. 'Tis the Season.
Sorry to hear that. It always feels like a violation of your personal space, doesn't it.

I've been robbed twice, both times I was asleep in my apartment. Long story short, the second time was the day before Thanksgiving and I had just got home from bartending and didn't close my front door all the way. My bad, but it still doesn't give anyone the right to walk into your home and take a bunch of your stuff. $400 in cash and a rather large and heavy jar of loose change with around $100 in it. Cops came, dusted...nothing. Hopefully your guys will find out who these punks are. Have a happy Holidays in the mean time.

4. Get a dog or two..
I have two...one's a great dane. Studies show houses w/ dogs get burglerized (sp?) less than those without.

19. I have two dogs. One is a Rottweiler.
She is a real wimp, but has a big bark. Just seeing her at the window will make anyone think twice about trying to break into my house. There have been break-ins at other houses around me.

6. Update: CSI dropped by
--in the form of one overworked fingerprint technician who couldn't find a single print. I didn't really think she would. She was a very cool lady, and during our conversation she swore a pox upon Gil Grissom.

At least now I can close and lock my window...

13. that CSI show is such utter garbage
I never could watch it because I know it is friggin' nonsense and I am a LAY person - I cannot even begin to imagine what the professionals think of such rot.

Sorry PN6 and I hope things are better soon - by the way, I met you not that long ago and you did not seem overweight to me at all.

16. My wife teaches Forensic Science at the local university...
She'll sometimes start a class by having people point out all the absurdities of the last CSI show. She used to be one full time before our 2nd child, now she just teaches. A word of warning though...don't look through the text book before eating.

17. pretty cool !
I am a true crime buff and contrary to what many think, that involves more fascination with how crimes are solved than with the crimes themselves. If you have even a little bit of knowledge of how things work, stuff like CSI is simply insulting to one's intelligence

7. That sucks, sorry to hear it.
I second the dog recommendation. I've got two and they raise a holy ruckus when someone comes near our house.

I had a similar conversation with a CSI guy locally. He said a lot of the stuff they do on the show is ludicrous.

8. My cat wouldn't approve of a dog.
Besides, there's a 20 lb. limit on the size of any pets in the complex. Not much a 20 lb. barker could do other than water someone's pants leg.

14. actually PN6
thieves consistently say it's the noise a dog makes and not its size that makes it a pox on their work - they say a yappy little f*** is their worst nightmare :o

18. That's good to know...
I'd to have a small yapper...to sit in my lap and be a friend to my border collie mix.

9. Jesus, that sucks.
Probably good you weren't there. Some friends of mine down the road got broken into while they were home. They didn't even know until they went into their bedroom and found the window screen slashed and stuff taken.

Makes me want to get apartment insurance.

10. I had that happen once, in Stanton California. Same thing, they had to be watching me.
I was gone for maybe thirty minutes and when I came back, I was missing a TV and a VCR. When I lived in Pittsburgh, I had my truck broken into twice in one week. The first time, they stole the stereo and the next time, they came back for the speakers. A month later, my car was broken into and they stole both the stereo and speakers.

12. same thing happened to me about 15 years ago....
I was only gone about 20 minutes. Lived out in the country in a small cluster of duplexes, so it was undoubtedly one of my neighbors who ripped me off. Life sucks, sometimes.

20. Scum Thieves
Always say "Bye Bluto, I'll be back in a few." as you leave the house. Go to City Health Dept and get Quarantine sign. Check with Pawn Shops. give them a written description and police contact number. Most crack thieves are really dumb and get caught. it is a sucky feeling though.

21. I live in a first-floor condo, so I'm definitely paranoid about this
kind of thing...not an issue in winter when everything stays closed and locked, but I've got extra protection for the sliding glass door to my patio. As far as being overweight, even if you were Rambo, it wouldn't have made a difference to someone watching and waiting until you had left the premises. I hope your insurance takes care of your loss...
