Pippin the Dog: Please Teach Me to Pee in the Snow
Edited on Wed Dec-20-06 03:28 PM by Writer

Hello. My name is Pippin, otherwise known as Peregrine Took. I am Writer's two year-old miniature American Eskimo, and I have a problem.

It's snowing outside. Really, really snowing outside, and I have to go to the bathroom. But like a coward, every time Writer opens the door for me, I refuse to go outside and do my doggedly duty.

So now I'm sitting in this warm, cozy house in Colorado with a full bladder and a lot of energy. A cat creeps around here, and I have fought the urge to lift my leg on him (HA!)

Writer even placed her hand on my back while I stood in the snow on the back porch, and nothing happened! I have all of this winter fur - I'd think that I'd be more willing to run out there for a quick let-go, then make my way back inside.

What should I do? I think Writer's about to toss me out for good!

- THE END -

2. Pippin the Dog: Who are you calling a GIRL?
I'm a BOY DOG. A boy dog who is doesn't want to freeze his unmentionables - but I have to pee!

4. Oh, whoops. He's handsome, I meant.
One of those long haired model types, LOL.

Maybe carry him out with you, and put him down next to a tree.

5. That happens all the time...
because he looks so girly. :P

I don't think I'd be able to make it out to a tree, much less be able to carry Pippin there for a quick leg-lift. I would sink down to my knees in my backyard.

3. Poor Pippin - wish I could help.

Some sort of phobia obviously; just like my pup Ellie, who won't go out when it RAINS. She'll hold it for two days if necessary. :D How about if you toss food out in the snow? His favorite treats perhaps?

6. Pippin is built for the snow...
his breed is a spitz variety that used to herd reindeer in Lapland. He's being a WEENIE! I should try the treat idea, though.

12. It worked! It worked!
Writer tossed a handful of cookies onto the back porch. After munching on them, dreaming of my homeland of snowy cliffs and reindeer dung, I noticed a tantalizing looking post supporting the covered porch. Ahhhhh. I feel much better now.

7. That's an odd problem.
I've never had a dog that didn't love playing in the snow.

10. Dig a path
I have to do it for my Italian Greyhound. She hates the snow and is so tiny she would get her privates frozen anyway.

11. That's what I do
My dog HATES the snow. So I have to dig him a little trench from the back steps to the yard.

14. My dachshund hates going out in snow, too.
Fortunately, we live in central North Carolina now, so we hardly see it.

What I used to do was dig a small path in the snow, then walk him out there on a leash. We would just keep walking back and forth and I would say, "Hurry up," or "Go pee." We didn't come back in until there were results. And there would be praise galore when he finally peed!

When I moved to NC, I brought my heavy-duty snow shovel with me just in case.

Good luck, and give Pippin some head scrootchies! :)

17. Dear Peregrine Took
learn to use the cat box :D

Dear Writer,

just toss the dog out for about a half hour, he'll be fine, and his instincts will kick in, and he'll find he loves being out in the snow.

18. Come live at my house. We don't have much snow.
And I have a dog who I think is part American Eskimo who would like you.

Actually, seriously, I had a dog who once wouldn't go out for 28 hours straight in the rain, we finally had to CARRY him out and he went for about 10 minuts.

Can your owner dig you a flat little path to talk on? Our neighbor did that once for our dogs. It looked like a snow tunnel, and they liked peeing in it.
