1. I still have to hear the albums I just ordered and the ones..
I'm getting for Christmas. My list will be a top 20 - not a top 10. I'll be posting my list in early January. Maybe this topic will still be around then, or I'll create a new topic. Is a top 20 ok on this board?

3. Mine..
I can only list seven:

1. Bob Dylan - Modern Times
2. Elvis Costello and Allen Touissant - The River in Reverse
3. Diana Krall - From This Moment On
4. Mark Knopfler & Emmylou Harris - All the Road Running
5. Paul Simon - Surprise
6. Rosanne Cash - Black Cadillac
7. T Bone Burnett - The True False Identity

I'd probably add The Decemberists and Tom Waits, but I have not heard enough of those albums.

And I saw The Racontuers ahead of Dylan in Boston. Interesting band, very talented, but they were so freakin' loud I had to put my hands over my ears to save them for Dylan. :wtf: Major turn off.

7. number 4
on your list is the only one I've heard from any of the lists so far posted.

I guess that makes it my number 1. :)

I've no idea what else came out this year, or if I even bought anything else from this year. Maybe someone else will post another disc I have, and I'll be able to put a number two item on my own.

I do really like the Mark Knoppfler / EmmyLou Harris disc. I knew I would, as soon as I heard about it...

:hi:

the fifth is the R.E.M. IRS compilation 'I Feel Fine' which is old stuff but still good.

8. In no particular order
Yo la Tengo - I am not afraid of you and will beat your ass
Michael Franti and Spearhead - Yell Fire
Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint - the River in Reverse
Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris - All the Roadrunning
The Dixie Chicks - Taking the Long Way
Guy Clark - Workbench songs
Drive by Truckers - A Blessing and A curse
Bruce Sprinsteen - We Shall Overcome: the Seeger Sessions
The Gourds - Heavy Ornamentals
Linda Ronstadt, Ann Savoy - Adieu False Heart
Los Lobos - The Town and the City

Okay, I think that's enough. And I guess I can't count too! I haven't listened to enough whole albums to judge but those are the ones I play the most.

16. How is that Franti album?
Obviously you like it, but musically how is it? Is more folkish or does it a rock/pop feel?

26. More rock/hip-hop even
So I surprised I like it but that song "Light up Ya lighter" just floors me. It is anti-war, anti Bush. Great lyrics.

11. Oh crap, I forgot the Iron Maiden, Mars Volta, and Mastodon albums - good stuff!
That's the problem with only having ten on a list. I could easily do a top 50 this year.

This was a good year musically. I just can't stand the pop crap that came out and gets most of the airplay. Warner Bros. just bought Roadrunner Records so perhaps some of the great metal bands will now get some proper publicity.

Here are another two that need to be added to the list:

Sacrament by Lamb of God

The Fall of Ideals by All That Remains

I'll have to pick that one up sometime.

I'd also have to nominate OSI's Free (which is excellent if you like Dream Theater / Porcupine Tree type stuff).

Tori Amos- A Piano: The Collection

Justin Timberlake- Futuresex/LoveSounds

The Fray- How To Save A Life

I've got nothing else because every other CD I would have chosen (Tori Amos' The Beekeeper, Ben Folds' Songs for Silverman) were all from 2005.

Oy!

13. Only three that came out this year that I bought, all fantastic.
1) Yo La Tengo - I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass

2) Flaming Lips - At War with the Mystics

3) Barry Adamson - Stranger on the Sofa

Most of my music is from long-dead artists. :D

17. I'm a music whore too. But I've only bought about 5 albums this year.
I have downloaded several more and lots of selected tracks. I welcome the ability to download selected tracks.... keeps me from having to buy complete albums, when I really only want a few tracks.

And I listen much more selectively as well. No more top 40 crap for me. When I want to listen to broadcast music, I usually listen to selected stations on line and I will soon be an XM satellite subscriber.

19. I'm a Sirius subscriber.
I've been one for almost three years now. I couldn't believe how much good music I was missing once a gave up corporate radio. I've always been a cd collector, but after having my horizons expanded it is a turn into an addiction. Oh well, I could spend my money on worse things. Now, excuse me. I need to go order a new cd. :)

23. I'm a big Dylan fan. And he's on XM, so I'm there.
He has a weekly one hour show in which he plays DJ. It's a blast, just listening to him. His knowledge of music is encyclopedic.

But I love listening to all the stuff on XM that is never played on broadcast radio. I'm sure Sirius is great too.

27. 1) Joanna Newsom - Ys

2) Charlotte Gainsbourg - 5:55

3) Cat Power - The Greatest

4) Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - The Letting Go

5) The Dresden Dolls - Yes, Virginia

6) Sibylle Baier - Colour Green

7) Jenny Lewis (with the Watson Twins) - Rabbit Fur Coat

8) Josephine Foster - A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing

9) Destroyer - Destroyer's Rubies

10) Lambchop - Damaged

(The top five are pretty set in stone, the others I've just done on the fly and I'm sure I've forgotten something really important. Ys is far and above the #1 on my list though -- I've been playing it daily since late August and ended up buying it on vinyl. The Sibylle Baier album was actually recorded in the 70s and not released commercially until this year, but as far as I'm concerned it counts.)

31. I can't -- the magazine I work for gets first publishing rights
:P

If this thread's still kickin', I'll post next Wednesday.

I can say, though, that only one album in your Top 10 is in mine.
Flaming Lips almost made it into mine, but I felt it didn't hold up under repeated listenings. ... I actually thought Beck's new album was his weakest effort in years. ... Red Hot Chili Peppers are dead to me, ever since Anthony Kiedis told me to "fuck off" ... I'm actually not familiar with Agalloch ... Can't stand pretentious tripe, so I had to discount Tool  ... Didn't hear the new Queensryche -- it's really that good? ... And Gnarls Barkley's a bit overrated, I think, but still real good.

I write the music column, among other things, and I've got a Top 10 coming for our year in review issue. True, I could probably post my top 10 here and it wouldn't be a big deal becuase no one at work would likely see it. But if someone did ... :scared:

...one more time, I will murder a baby kitten! I swear it! I'd rather hear the dance remix of "Let the Eagle Soar" for
the rest of my life that have to listen to that song one more time.
