6. It's a good thing I don't have a pic of me shooting a gun
Then my progressive cred would really be shot to hell.

18. Thank you.
Dog #1 is evidence, but dog #2 is in a VERY happy home. She's a daddy's girl and has her own sofa.

10. What's the overall fall-back quote on the people who abuse the animals?
My BIL works with the animal rescue here (for birds of prey; that's why we have owls flying into our living room), but we were involved with some dog rescues. Police showed up, animal rescue showed up, the dogs were taken to shelters and were adopted later (crude process, you're under supervision to make sure no abuser gets free dogs), but after half a year the guy had some other dogs - then the same process again.

How is the average fall-back quote over there?

And, thanks for your work and the compassion.

13. We're very fortunate.
My org works with and has an excellent relationship with the local animal controls. We also campaign pretty hard to see to it that when charges are brought, the penalty includes not having animals in the future. Normally, a neighbor will have come forward to us about it. Since they are completely anonymous, they regularly update us with any new information on the criminal, including if they have any new animals. It's tough to estimate how many get away with it later. It's probably, and pathetically, close to 50% if I had to guess.

16. Same here.
There just don't have enough personnel to observe all the abusers. And since this is close to Italy where you can buy every puppy on the local market, it makes it really hard to control it. At least, you can't buy puppies or cats in the pet stores here, but I think I told you this before. The caged birds are sad enough.

Here's the latest one released:

17. Beautiful animal.
I don't know birds. What kind?

Good for you folks, too. Many "pet" type animals are so often overlooked. Dogs and cats dominate. It seems easy to forget about our feathered friends. Maybe we all think that they could just "fly away" when we're done with them.

20. It's a Common Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus),
Edited on Thu Dec-21-06 07:24 PM by Call Me Wesley
one of the very little falcons (although the big ones aren't really big). It's nothing like seeing an eagle.

Here's my very own 'pet' peeve: We forget about many, many animals, heck, most of them. We're active in animal rescue but suck spiders into the vacuum 'cause they're creepy, and no one's going to march for them, anyways. How about all the exotic little animals locked away in cages, and since they're some who still buy it, they're still exported - the ones surviving will be sold.

I'm pretty much guilty of this too. I had snakes when I was a kid; tarantulas, scorpions and lizards. Others thought it was pretty cool, so they got some, too. After the 'creepy feeling' after showing them to their friends was over, these poor animals all ended up in my room. A king python with final arthritis, a tarantula starved to death so he wouldn't take any food anymore, two scorpions never fed, etc. And too many kids asking me if they could give me their bunnies for the snakes to eat, since they once wanted a pair of bunnies - who mate and made little bunnies ...

Yes, it's cute little puppies and cats. They look good on a poster, too. A tarantula or a scorpion will not. Talk about bigotry at its best.

Me (far right) smoking on laundry day in 1983. I was also quite blasted on cocaine. Those were the days, lemme tell ya, in that roach-infested row-house.
