Do you have a Christmas movie that makes you cry?
Tell us what movie & why

I'll start. "It's a Wonderful Life".
I've NEVER watched the movie and not cried at the end.

31. That IS a really sad movie.
I thought it would be dumb when we watched it in 8th grade, and in some parts it kind of was, but it was also really sad.

6. Earnest saves Christmas
There was a man that was a ringer for Earnest in our neighborhood when I was kid. He was the only adult who bothered to listen to me for quite a few years when I was a kid and my family was in a long term crisis. A big brother sort. Not the brightest but big on horse sense, and he stuttered. And looked VERY much like Earnest too and had the big heart to match.

7. The movie "Love Actually"......
And why? Because I'm a sentimental sap, is why!

It's a mostly upbeat love story, set at Christmas, in England.......

Great ensemble cast, multiple story lines...easy to follow, not to worry.......

Very compelling story telling! I just love it.......

but not at the end, I was touched when Santa talked to that Danish orphan.

I watched it years ago. They showed the colorized version, so I switched my television to black and white mode.

But I LOVE It's A Wonderful Life, get a little choked up each time I see it.

A little joke some fellow shoppers and I came up with at the cashier's this year!

I can't say there are any holiday movies which move me to tears. But, I do pay
close attention to the messages in some of them.

19. I have "It's a Wonderful Life"
but I insist that is NOT a Christmas movie. It kinda burns me that it is treated as such, but what the hey, it also means it gets shown once a year.

Why is it not a Christmas movie? First, because it is not about Christmas, Christ, or Santa. It is not about how the 'Christmas spirit' saves the fluffy bunnies or the school or melts old man Potter's heart. Potter stays a Scrooge, and all the Christmas joy in the world does not change that. There's no 'let's help George, because it's Christmas' and George never says 'Well, I gotta help Gower or Ernieor Violet or Bert, because it's Christmas'.

It's a larger message, that if you spend your life helping people, even though it may not be as financially rewarding as working for a Potter, that you can make a difference - a huge difference even. It's about coming through for your friends, treating people decently, and having your friends come through for you.

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten,
and children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white

27. I cry at the beginning of it too.
I am very sentimental. :-)

Also, The March of the Wooden Soldiers, when the soldiers start and the "March of the Toys" begins. Watched that movie every Thanksgiving as a kid, it makes me think of my mom whom I lost in December of 2004. The holidays are very bittersweet but I love this time of year anyway.

28. "It's a Wonderful Life"
gets me each and every time I watch it. I cry through many scenes, and really turn on the waterworks at the end when the whole town is bailing George out and singing.

I call it my Christmas purge...because when I'm done watching it I feel like I've expelled enough emotion from all the real things that I personally have on my plate that I haven't cried over.

Kind of like therapy, except free.

When it's over I'm renewed.

35. "The Snowman" by Raymond Briggs
It's a staple in the U.K. where it's shown every year, but I managed to record it when it was on here (about +10 years ago). It's a beautifully animated 1/2 with nice music and pretty hand drawn animations. I believe you can rent it and I've seen it for sale too. Well worth it for kids and adults too -- even though it does make you cry......

Merry Christmas. :toast:

40. I don't really cry at movies
but some do get me a little misty.

"All Mine To Give" which is about a pioneer family in Wisonsin whose parents die and the oldest son must find homes for all his brothers and sisters. Naturally, the last child finds a home on Christmas day. The last scene in the movie is the older brother walking away in the snow while the other child is being hugged by his new parents.

"Penny Serenade" which I just watched the other day. Cary Grant and Irene Dunne are a couple who adopt a baby girl. When she's about 5, she gets a part in her school Christmas show. She's an "echo" -- she has to go behind a cloud and "echo" the older children when they sing. She also has to put the "star" over the stable where Baby Jesus is born. And she has to be in her stocking feet so no one will hear her.

The next Christmas we learn that the little girl (Trina) got sick and died three weeks before and the parents are too grief-stricken to be of any comfort to each other. There's a big rainstorm and a frantic woman comes to their door, tells them her car has broken down and that she needs to call a taxi. They let her in but she is unable to get a cab. so Irene Dunne and Cary Grant offer to drive her and her little boy to wherever they need to go. Turns out they're going to the school so the little boy can be in the Christmas pageant. When he gets out of the car, Irene Dunne notices that he's got on tennis shoes and she asks Cary Grant to get them out of there.
