What's your favorite Christmas song, sung by whom? |
|
I've been playing Mariah Carey's All I Want for Christmas is You (which in my atheist houshold is likely all I'll get). But, I love the way she sings the song. What's your favorite?

it's worth any trouble to find Kathleen Ferrier's 1948 recording with the Boyd Neel Orchestra. The recording itself isn't all that wonderful, but she is.

3. I believe in Father Christmas |
|
by Emerson, Lake and Palmer
Quite fitting in this day and age:
I Believe In Father Christmas
They said there'll be snow at Christmas They said there'll be peace on Earth But instead it just kept on raining A veil of tears for the Virgin's birth I remember one Christmas morning A winters light and a distant choir And the peal of a bell and that Christmas Tree smell And their eyes full of tinsel and fire
They sold me a dream of Christmas They sold me a Silent Night And they told me a fairy story 'Till I believed in the Israelite And I believed in Father Christmas And I looked at the sky with excited eyes 'Till I woke with a yawn in the first light of dawn And I saw him and through his disguise
I wish you a hopeful Christmas I wish you a brave New Year All anguish pain and sadness Leave your heart and let your road be clear They said there'll be snow at Christmas They said there'll be peace on Earth Hallelujah Noel be it Heaven or Hell The Christmas you get you deserve.

4. Candle in the Window by Alabama |
|
When I joined the Navy in October 1972, my mother put an electric Christmas Candle in my bedroom window so I could always find my way home. Mom died in 89 and I asked Dad if I could have that candle. He said no, you take it when I pass on, I'll leave it in "your" room so you will always know where home is just like Mom intended. Dad died in 04 and that candle is now in a window in our home. I put it on during Christmas so Mom and Dad know where we are. I don't know if there is any religiousity to the song but it "tears" me up everytime I hear it.

6. The Christmas Song by Nat King Cole |
|
"The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire)"
Chestnuts roasting on an open fire Jack Frost nipping at your nose Yuletide carols being sung by a choir And folks dressed up like Eskimos Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe Help to make the season bright Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow Will find it hard to sleep tonight
They know that Santa's on his way He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh And every mother's child is gonna spy To see if reindeer really know how to fly
So I'm offering this simple phrase To kids from one to ninety-two Although it's been said many times, many ways Merry Christmas to you
So I'm offering this simple phrase To kids from one to ninety-two Although it's been said many times, many ways Merry Christmas Merry Christmas Merry Christmas to you

11. "Infant Holy, Infant Lowly" sung by a choir |
|
Infant holy, infant lowly, For his bed a cattle stall; Oxen lowing, little knowing Christ the babe is Lord of all. Swift are winging angels singing, Nowells ringing, tidings bringing. Christ the Babe is Lord of all.
Flocks were sleeping, shepherds keeping Vigil till the morning new; Saw the glory, heard the story, Tidings of a gospel true. Thus rejoicing, free from sorrow, Praises voicing, greet the morrow, Christ the babe was born for you!
It's my current favorite Christmas carol.
Words and music are traditional, from Poland.

That album was produced by Peter Schickele, who is better known as PDQ Bach.
Joan Baez has a gorgeous voice.
The guy who wrote O Holy Night also wrote the ballet Giselle. Adolphe Adam. Trivia.

produced by "PDQ Bach"? That explains the JSBach-like little 5-second pieces between songs on the recording.
And yes, it's O Holy Night. I guess they called it something else on the record because she sang it in French.
It's the first CD I play when starting to set up the Christmas tree every year. It doesn't get old.
Regards.

The Mariah Carey song is a big favorite, too--my daughter and I crank it every time it comes on the radio, and my friend and I spontaneously danced to it in the kitchen last night at my Christmas Eve party.
